[Hyukoh's 5th album: With Love]

Hyukoh is back with a new album <To Love> after a year since <24: How to find true love and happiness>. If Hyukoh's work method in the past has been to move towards a pre-determined musical goal, the work on this album was done in a process-oriented way. Recorded instruments at Real World Studios, a historic real-world studio in England where Paul Simon, Amy Winehouse, Bjork, Kanye West, etc. have worked, and recorded and mixed vocals with Hyukoh's longtime collaborator Norman Nietzsche in Berlin. This album got closer to the analog sound that Hyukoh had actively pursued since [23], and in terms of form, he tried to remove everything other than the most necessary elements to make an album. This album, which all members are proud of as the most satisfactory result in terms of sound, can be said to be a record of musical conversations and the process of the 6-year-old band Hyukoh.


['With love', not '26']

As the number in the title symbolizes, Hyukoh, who has been singing about the various emotions and thoughts of youth, now broadens the horizon of interest and empathy to various problematic phenomena that our society has on a daily/political basis and the practice methods to improve and overcome them. .
The problems we experience every day, such as discrimination and hatred, fixed dominance, conflict between generations, and environmental destruction, are the result of the contemporary social structure built quickly and deformedly without reflective thinking. Hyukoh does not come up with a grandiose catchphrase that overturns and improves these aspects, but presents 'love' as a daily practice that can be practiced from today.
In the meantime < LOVE YA! Hyukoh, who supported various forms of love in lyrics and music videos such as <TOMBOY> and <TOMBOY>, showed this in his attitude towards music and work rather than throwing a direct and clear message in this album. 'Love' presented by Hyukoh as an alternative to the contemporary consumption method that consumes everything quickly and easily objectifies it is not lightly liking and letting go of the object created by the media or trends, but a self-discovered It is also another word for deep love for a subject and the happiness found through it.

[Wolfgang Tillmans, < Osterwaldstrasse >, 2011]

The image that adorned the <With Love> album was <Osterwaldstrasse> by Wolfgang Tillmans, a leading contemporary photographer, and was used with the full support of the artist. Tillmans was the first non-British person to receive the Turner Prize, Britain's most prestigious art award, and has received worldwide attention and support through work that documents the daily lives of minorities and outsiders and the objects around them.
Tillmans' 2011 work, < Osterwaldstrasse >, is a photograph of a roadside flower bed mixed with different types of plants. This scene, which is withering together at different speeds, but still alive, is an image that represents the theme of <To Love>, and will be used on the album cover, posters, and tour T-shirts.

혁오가 < 24: How to find true love and happiness >이후 1년 만에 새 앨범 <사랑으로>로 돌아왔다. 그간 혁오가 진행했던 작업 방식이 미리 정해둔 음악적 지향점을 향해 나아가는 것이었다면, 이번 앨범 작업은 다분히 과정지향적인 방식으로 이루어졌다. 폴 사이먼, 에이미 와인하우스, 뷔욕, 칸예 웨스트 등이 작업한 바 있는 영국의 유서깊은 리얼월드 스튜디오 Real World Studios에서 악기 녹음을, 베를린에서 혁오의 오랜 협업자인 놀먼 니체와 함께 보컬 녹음 및 믹싱을 진행한 이번 앨범은 혁오가 [23] 때부터 적극적으로 추구했던 아날로그 사운드에 보다 가까이 다가갔으며, 형식 면에서는 앨범을 만드는 데 가장 필요한 요소 외의 모든 것을 덜어내고자 했다. 멤버 모두가 사운드적으로 가장 만족스러운 결과물이라 자부하는 이번 앨범은 데뷔 6년차 밴드 혁오가 보여주는 음악적 대화와 그 과정의 기록이라고 할 수 있다.


[‘26’이 아닌 ‘사랑으로’]

“사랑은 알면 알수록 어렵고 복잡한, 그래서 이성으로는 풀 수 없는, 헤겔이 말한 바 “가장 괴이한 모순”의 형태로 존재하지만, 사랑은, 여전히, 유일하게, 모순과 부조리의 골짜기에서 신음하는 우리에게 손을 뻗는 거의 유일한 대안이다. 그게 우리가 사랑의 본질을 향해 거듭 물음을 던지는 이유다.” _장석주, <사랑에 대하여> [22], [23], [24: How to find true love and happiness] 등 음반 작업 당시 나이를 제목으로 해왔던 혁오의 앨범 제목이 달라졌다. 제목의 숫자가 상징하듯 청춘이 갖는 다양한 감정과 상념을 노래해 왔던 혁오는 이제 관심과 공감의 지평을 우리 사회가 일상적/정치적으로 갖는 여러 문제적 현상들과 이를 개선하고 극복하기 위한 실천방식으로 넓힌다.
우리가 매일 경험하고 있는 차별과 혐오, 고정된 우위, 세대 갈등, 환경파괴 등의 문제는 반성적 사고 없이 빠르고 기형적으로 구축된 동시대의 사회구조 아래 만들어진 결과물이다. 혁오는 이러한 양상을 전복하고 개선하는 거창한 캐치프레이즈를 내놓는 것이 아니라, 오늘부터 할 수 있는 일상의 실천으로서 ‘사랑'을 제시한다.
그간 < LOVE YA! >, < TOMBOY > 등의 가사나 뮤직비디오에서도 다양한 형태의 사랑을 지지했던 혁오는 이번 앨범에서 직접적이고 뚜렷한 메시지를 던지기 보다는 음악을 대하고 작업하는 태도에서 이를 드러냈다. 모든 것을 빠르게 소비하고 쉽게 대상화 해버리는 동시대의 소비방식에 맞서는 대안으로 혁오가 제시한 ‘사랑'은 미디어나 유행이 만들어내 눈앞에 주어진 대상을 가볍게 좋아하고 흘려 보내는 것이 아닌, 자신이 주체적으로 찾아낸 대상에 대한 깊은 애호와 그로 인해 찾아지는 행복의 다른 말이기도 하다.


[연결된 구조의 곡 구성]

총 6곡으로 이루어져 있는 앨범 <사랑으로>는 전곡이 타이틀이자, 6곡이 하나이기도 하다. 앨범을 만든 혁오 멤버들은 ‘Help’, ‘Hey Sun’, ‘Silverhair Express’, ‘Flat dog’, ‘World of the Forgotten’, ‘New born’ 등 독자적인 제목을 가지고 있는 6곡을 27분짜리 단일 곡으로 보아도 무방하다고 말한다. 또한 <사랑으로>에 포함된 6곡은 앨범에 수록된 순서대로 연속해서 즐길 수 있도록 심혈을 기울여 마스터링되었다. 6곡 모두 특유의 매력을 가지고 있지만, 이번 <사랑으로>는 하나의 서사와 흐름을 가지고 있는 전곡을 긴 호흡으로 완상해 보기를 바란다.


[볼프강 틸만스, < Osterwaldstrasse >, 2011]

<사랑으로> 앨범을 장식한 이미지는 동시대를 대표하는 사진작가 볼프강 틸만스Wolfgang Tillmans의 < Osterwaldstrasse >로, 작가의 전폭적인 지지 하에 사용되었다. 틸만스는 영국의 가장 권위있는 미술상인 터너상Turner Prize을 비 영국인 최초로 수상한 바 있으며, 소수자와 아웃사이더들의 일상과 그 주변의 사물들을 기록하는 작업을 통해 세계적인 관심과 지지를 받아왔다.
틸만스의 2011년작 < Osterwaldstrasse >는 다종의 식물이 한데 섞인 길가의 화단을 찍은 사진이다. 그 속도는 각각 다르지만 다 함께 시들어가고 있는, 그러나 여전히 모두가 살아있는 이 장면은 <사랑으로>의 주제의식을 대변하는 이미지로, 이번 앨범의 표지와 포스터, 투어 티셔츠 등에 활용될 예정이다.
