소년은 동틀 무렵의 엷은 잠에서 눈을 뜨며 문득 이런 생각을 했다. 파도가 쓸려 가며 자연스러운 무늬를 남기는 것처럼. 한 번쯤은 아무 목적도 결말도 모르는 길을 무작정 헤매고 싶다고. 주변은 깊은 물 속처럼 조용하고 서늘한 탓인지 온몸이 작게 떨린다. 눈을 뜬 소년이 다른 소년들을 조심스럽게 깨우는 동안 안개는 서서히 걷히고 있었다. 새벽은 여기까지다.
걷힌 안개 뒤로 성난 듯이 하늘로 솟아오른 절벽이 어렴풋이 보였다. 쉬지 않으면 잰 걸음으로 하루 안에 겨우 닿을 듯한 거리에. 사방은 온통 마른 가지들로 무성하다. 언젠가 이곳도 초록 잎으로 가득 찬 생기 있는 숲이었겠지. 소년들은 서로를 일으켜 세운다. 몸에 묻은 먼지들을 털어내며 시선이 가는 곳은 자연스럽게 저 멀리 보이는 절벽이다.
우선 여기가 어딘지 알아야 한다. 소년들은 몇 아름이나 되는 커다란 나무줄기 곁에서 서로를 바라본다.
입을 벌리면 희미한 숨결이 느껴질 만큼 한기가 맴돌지만 웅크리고 있을 순 없다. 이유를 알아야 한다.
