CLASS:y는 2022년 2월 종영한 MBC 글로벌 K팝 걸오디션 '방과후 설렘'을 통해 탄생했다. 평균연령 16세의 성장 가능성이 무한한 7인조로, 방송 당시 11주 연속 비드라마 화제성 부문 1위를 차지하는 등 세계 K팝 팬들의 관심이 집중됐다.

CLASS:y는 '수업(방과후 설렘)을 끝냈다'는 의미의 'CLASS'(Class is over), 새로운 시작(chapter)의 의미를 부여한 ':'(콜론), '같은 K팝이지만 차원이 다른 클라씨의 음악을 즐겨보자'는 'Why(=Y) don't we enjoy same same but different music of CLASSY?'를 결합한 팀명이다. '오디션을 넘어선 클라씨가 차원이 다른 음악으로 세계 K팝 팬들을 사로잡겠다'라는 포부가 담겼다.
