Think of a wave. Sometimes it breaks and spreads quickly. Sometimes they calmly scatter in all directions. Although the overall shape is similar, it does not show the same appearance even once. It crumbles differently each time. It can connect or break up. There is nothing to do in every case. It is both sad and happy to think of a wave in that there is nothing to do. In an article he wrote about his new album, Changgeun wrote that he unraveled "the story of meeting and leaving a loved one, and various emotions fluctuating from looking back." For each individual, time flows differently. Love and being are never repeated the same. Water waves are exquisite metaphors for love, existence and time.
Yang Chang-geun is a singer-songwriter who debuted in 2009 with the EP [Winter Rain]. Before and after the release of the EP, Changgeun focused on Salon Badabi.
It is often introduced that Badabi is a live club that opened in 2004 and closed in 2015. The reason Badabi insisted on adding the word “it is often introduced” is that it is too diverse to be simply described as a “live club,” ranging from indie pop in a universal form to experimental music and performances that are difficult to recognize, and sometimes literature and video. This is because it was a space where even the area of the back was put on stage. (It would not be strange if we call it multidisciplinary art. However, as multidisciplinary art that is done without being aware of it.)
Changgeun is an artist who spent the most beautiful days with Badabi. Among them, he played the most innocent and fine-grained folk song. From the EP in 2009 to the first full-length album [Old Heart] in 2014, Changgeun focused on folk songs. Changgeun's grammar was usually simple. Play arpeggios or gentle strokes on a folk guitar. Add soft songs and lyrics. Rather than utilizing other elements, I focus my ears on the harmony or discord between the two. Chang-geun was especially loved for his lyrics that touched the universal emotions felt by people passing by in their lives. For example, songs like '5AM' in [Old Heart]. “I think of the person who passed by while smoking a cigarette at around 5:00 in the morning looking at the rainy street.” “I heard that you are in love with someone else. I also dream of meeting someone else and falling in love. dream of happiness I hope you are happy.”
Chang-geun, who wanted to be happy, seems to have tried not to stay here. The ones I usually hung out with were those who played rougher or more experimental sounds. He himself has often expressed his love for rock music. It's hard to find any surviving records, but there was a time when they briefly formed and worked as band wizards in a style that combined rock 'n' roll and post-rock. On the other hand, while working as a DJ through the audio platform Ratdo's Band Music (currently named 'Rat Banmu'), he mainly plays old Korean CM songs, nursery rhymes, and kitsch dance music from the 80s and 90s, expressing his unknown tastes. also revealed The EP [Rainy Season], which was released around this time, became a small signal that Changgeun 'wants to expand musically'. And the second album arrived.
The first emotion I felt while listening to the new album was happiness, followed by friendship. The joy is probably because the new album prepared by an indie musician who has been there for over 10 years already has something different from the past, and the emotions of joy that naturally radiate when wearing new clothes are buried throughout the album. And the friendliness is probably because Chang-geun and Chang-geun's charms are nowhere to be found. The reason I recited Chang-geun's life as a musician earlier, including Badabi, is because Chang-geun's new album felt like a kind of 'summary compilation'. In this album, the songs Changgeun has made throughout his life, the music he has liked, and the emotions he has felt are condensed as a whole.
It's a summary, but it's not roomy. rather economical. In an article about the new album, Changgeun writes that it contains “various styles and sounds such as guitar pop, modern rock, folk rock, synth pop, and post-rock.” It is used only as 'material' in the album. Rather, in essence, this album is closer to 'pop' and 'pop.' It converges with good music. Songs and lyrics that anyone can like, this has been the biggest gist of Changgeun's charm from the beginning to the present. [WAVE] is free-spirited and calm at the same time.
A total of eight songs were included. The three songs that focus on playing are in charge of the intro, outro, and bridge in the middle, respectively. The five songs that focus on singing are gayo. Various feelings about love “I’m singing the long long night. I am coming to you after a long long night.” It is written in lyrics such as “Dance with me in it on a rainy and windy day.” There is a clear and easy-to-sing hook. This is an album that many people participated in like never before. Silica Gel, who is active as a producer, and Kim Chun-chu of Playbook contributed to the overall picture of the album. Notable artists such as Samu and Yoo Ji-mong helped arrange the song. There are many people who helped with performance and technical parts. It is announced under Yang Chang-geun's name, but on the other hand, it is also a joint result. What is the biggest difference between [WAVE] and Changgeun's past works? I want to write 'being together'. Just as waves can't help but get entangled with each other, in [WAVE], Chang-geun is with his friends and colleagues. In 2021, the 2020s of Yang Chang-geun, a middle-aged indie musician who has been in his 12th year of debut, begins with 'together'.

물결을 떠올려본다. 때로는 부서지며 빠르게 퍼져나간다. 때로는 잔잔하게 사방으로 흩어진다. 전체적인 형태는 비슷하더라도 단 한번 같은 모습을 보여주질 않는다. 때마다 다르게 바스러진다. 이어지기도 헤어지기도 한다. 매사에 어찌할 바가 없다. 어찌할 바가 없다는 점에서, 물결을 떠올리는 일은 슬프기도 기쁘기도 하다. 창근은 자신이 새 앨범에 관해 쓴 글에서 '사랑하던 존재와의 만남과 떠남, 그리고 돌아봄에서 요동치는 여러 감정에 대한 이야기”를 풀어냈다고 썼다. 개별자에게, 시간은 저마다 다르게 흐른다. 사랑과 존재는 단 한 번도 동일하게 반복되지 않는다. 물결은 사랑과 존재, 시간에 대한 절묘한 은유다.
양창근은 2009년 EP [겨울비]를 발표하며 데뷔한 싱어송라이터다. EP 발표를 전후로, 창근은 살롱 바다비를 중심으로 활동했다.
바다비는 2004년 문을 열어 2015년 영업을 종료한 라이브클럽이다, 라고 흔히 소개되곤 한다. 굳이 '흔히 소개되곤 한다'라는 식의 사족을 붙인 까닭은 바다비가 단순히 '라이브클럽'이라고만 표현하기에는 너무 다양한, 보편적인 형태의 인디팝부터 형체를 알아보기 어려운 실험적인 음악과 퍼포먼스, 때로는 문학과 영상 등의 영역까지도 무대에 올리던 공간인 탓이다. (그것을 우리는 다원예술이라 불러도 이상하지 않을 것이다. 단, 다원예술임을 의식하지 않은 채 이루어지는 다원예술로서.)
창근은 바다비의 가장 아름다웠던 시절을 함께 보낸 아티스트다. 그중에서도 가장 순박하고 결이 고운 포크송을 연주하던 이다. 2009년의 EP부터 2014년 첫 번째 정규앨범 [오래된 마음]까지, 창근은 포크송에 집중했다. 창근의 문법은 대개 심플했다. 포크기타로 아르페지오나 잔잔한 스트로크를 연주한다. 여린 노래와 노랫말을 얹는다. 다른 요소를 활용하기보다는 이 둘의 조화 또는 어긋남에 귀를 집중시킨다. 창근은 특히 오가는 사람들이 삶 속에서 느끼는 보편적인 감정을 잘 건드리는 노랫말로 많은 사랑을 받았다. 이를테면 [오래된 마음]에 실린 '5AM' 같은 노래들. “새벽 다섯 시 무렵에 비내리는 거리를 보며 담배 한개비 피우다가 지나간 사람을 생각한다.” “지금 다른 사람과 사랑을 하고 있다 들었다. 나도 다른 사람을 만나서 사랑을 꿈꾼다. 행복을 꿈꾼다. 행복하길 바란다.”
행복하길 바라던 창근은 그러나 여기에만 머물지 않으려 했던 것으로 보인다. 주로 어울리던 이들은 보다 거칠거나 실험적인 사운드를 연주하던 이들이었다. 스스로도 록 음악에 대한 애정을 종종 피력한 바 있다. 남아있는 기록을 찾긴 어려우나 록큰롤과 포스트록을 결합한 스타일의 밴드 마법사들을 잠시 결성해 활동한 적도 있다. 한편 오디오 플랫폼 랏도의 밴드뮤직(현재 명칭 '랏밴뮤')를 통해 DJ로 활동하면서는 한국의 옛 CM송이나 동요, 80~90년대의 키치한 댄스음악들을 주로 틀며 그간 알려지지 않았던 자신의 취향들을 드러내기도 했다. 이 시기를 전후로 발매된 EP [Rainy Season]는 창근이 '음악적으로 확장하고자 함'을 알리는 작은 신호탄이 되었다. 그리고 도래한 두 번째 앨범.
새 앨범을 들으며 가장 먼저 느낀 감정은 반가움, 다음은 정겨움이었다. 반가움은 아마, 어느덧 10년 차가 넘은 인디 뮤지션이 준비한 신보에 기존과 다른 새로움이, 그리고 새로운 옷을 입었을 때 자연스레 발산되는 기쁨의 감정이 음반 곳곳에 묻어 있었기 때문에. 그리고 정겨움은 아마, 그럼에도 창근과 창근의 매력이 어디 가질 않은 탓에. 앞서 바다비를 포함한 창근의 음악가로서의 삶을 길게 읊은 것은 창근의 새 앨범이 일종의 '총집편'처럼 느껴졌기 때문이다. 이 앨범에는 창근이 그간 살아오면서 만들어온 노래들, 좋아해 온 음악들, 느껴온 감정들이 총체적으로 응축되어있다.
총집편이지만 방만하지 않다. 오히려 경제적이다. 창근은 새 앨범에 관한 글에서 “기타팝, 모던록, 포크록, 신스팝, 포스트록 등의 다양한 스타일과 사운드"를 담아냈다고 적고 있다. 하지만 글로만 접했을 때의 예상과는 다르게 그러한 요소들은 이 앨범에서 '재료'로서만 활용되고 있다. 오히려 본질적으로 이 앨범은 '팝'이자 '가요'에 가깝다. '재료'들은 잘 다듬어져 이야기를 효과적으로 풀어내기 위한 도구들로서 기능하며, 전체적으로는 정갈하고 듣기 좋은 음악으로 수렴한다. 누구나 좋아할 수 있는 노래와 노랫말, 이는 처음부터 지금까지 창근이 가진 매력의 가장 큰 요체였다. [WAVE]는 자유분방한 동시에 고요하다.
총 여덟 곡이 수록되었다. 연주에 중점을 둔 세 곡이 각각 인트로와 아웃트로, 중간의 브릿지를 담당한다. 노래에 중점을 둔 다섯 곡은 가요다. 사랑에 대한 다양한 감정을 “난 긴긴밤을 노래하고 있어. 난 긴긴밤을 걸어 네게 가고 있어.” “비바람이 몰아치는 날 그 속에서 나와 춤춰줘" 같은 노랫말에 실었다. 선명하고 따라부르기 좋은 훅이 존재한다. 이 여덟 곡이 모여 느슨한 공동체를 이룬다. 물결의 이미지를 상상하면서 듣는다면 또 다른 감정으로 다가올 것이다.
전에 없이 많은 이들이 참여한 앨범이다. 프로듀서로서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 실리카겔, 놀이도감의 김춘추가 앨범의 전체적인 상을 그리는데 기여했다. 주목받고 있는 아티스트인 사뮈, 유지몽이 편곡을 도왔다. 연주와 기술적인 부분을 도운 이들도 많다. 양창근의 이름으로 발표되지만 한편으론 공동의 결과물이기도 하다. [WAVE]가 창근의 지난 작업과 가장 달라진 점이 무엇일까. 나는 '함께 있다'는 것이라고 쓰고 싶다. 마치 물결이 어찌할 수 없이 서로가 뒤엉키듯, [WAVE]에서 창근은 친구, 동료들과 함께 있다. 2021년, 데뷔 12년차 중견 인디 뮤지션 양창근의 2020년대는 '함께'로부터 시작된다.
