The first album filled with fresh allure

Is it really necessary to elaborate on the significance Sanulim holds in the history of Korean popular music? Appearing in the winter of 1977 like a meteorite suddenly dropped from another world, Sanulim's music transformed the landscape of Korean popular music. Before Sanulim, there was no music like theirs. No other artist has simultaneously expressed such an innovative sound, a radical departure from all conventions, and an unblemished purity. The emergence of Sanulim was like a welcome rain for the Korean rock music scene, which had been parched and barren following the so-called "marijuana scandal" that struck the industry like a bolt from the blue in late 1975. Although the time the three brothers spent together as Sanulim was not particularly long, the names Sanulim—Kim Chang-wan, Kim Chang-hoon, and Kim Chang-ik—have already taken root in the history of Korean popular music, and for us who love their music, in a realm of "eternal life" that transcends the physical limitations of time and era. The power of that infinite vitality is tremendous. Like a beautiful white flower blooming one day, Sanulim's music, which brought a joy that seemed capable of overcoming any sorrow, did not remain merely a cherished memory held in the hearts of those who lived through that era with smiles; instead, it became an unceasing sound after passing through the harsh evaluations of time. It remains music that still touches the heart, soothes the sensibility, conveys unrestrained excitement, and offers wonderful surprises. That is why, for the young people of 2024, Sanulim can be a heart-fluttering allure that shines brightly within reach and radiates the energy of pure joy, rather than a relic or something of the past.

The outline of this project is simple. It involves junior musicians and bands reinterpreting 50 songs by Sanulim, Kim Chang-wan, and Kim Chang-hoon in their own styles by December 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of the release of Sanulim's debut album. There are two notable points. Generally, the entities planning and executing tribute albums are labels, record companies, or other artists. While the subjects of the tribute may participate as special guests, it is rare for the artist themselves to take the lead. The person who spearheaded everything for the "Sanulim 50th Anniversary Project" is Kim Chang-hoon. He wanted to introduce contemporary bands and musicians—who possess outstanding talent and individuality but are less well-known—through the connecting link of Sanulim, in addition to established artists. By providing a small platform where participating artists can fully exercise their imagination and showcase their capabilities, Sanulim's music, belonging to the past, is reborn as a new sound grounded in contemporary sensibilities. Just as the record label president instructed the producer not to interfere with anything the band did when Sanulim first entered the recording studio, Kim Chang-hoon watched with joy to see what kind of garments talented juniors would create using Sanulim as the raw material. Another important point is the duration of this project. "Sanulim 50th Anniversary" is a long-term project spanning four years, from the fall of 2023 until the 50th anniversary of their debut. At least one single must be released consistently every month. This means we can look forward to seeing which musicians interpret and express which songs, what fresh emotions they will deliver, and which artists will be discovered in the process.

한국의 대중음악사에서 산울림이 지니는 의미를 굳이 부연할 필요가 있을까? 1977년 겨울, 마치 다른 세계에서 갑자기 뚝 떨어진 운석처럼 이 땅에 나타난 산울림의 음악은 가요의 모습을 바꾸었다. 산울림 이전에 산울림과 같은 음악은 없었다. 이토록 혁신적인 사운드, 일체의 정형성에서 벗어난 파격과 티 없이 맑은 순수함을 동시에 표출했던 아티스트는 없었다. 산울림의 등장은 1975년 말 가요계에 날벼락처럼 닥쳐온 소위 '대마초 파동' 이후 앙상하게 메말라 있던 한국 록 음악계에 내린 단비와도 같았다. 세 형제가 온전히 함께했던 산울림의 시간이 그리 길었던 건 아니지만, 산울림과 김창완, 김창훈, 김창익이라는 이름은 가요사에서, 또 그들의 음악을 사랑하는 우리에게 이미 물리적 시간과 시대의 한계를 벗어난 '영생'의 영역에 자리하고 있다. 그 무한한 생명의 위력은 대단하다. 어느 날 피어난 예쁜 하얀 꽃처럼, 어떤 슬픔도 다 이겨 낼 수 있을 듯한 기쁨을 안겨 준 산울림의 음악은 그 시절을 살았던 이들이 웃는 모습으로 간직한 가슴속 추억에 머무르지 않고 냉혹한 세월의 평가를 거쳐 끊이지 않는 소리가 되었다. 여전히 마음에 와닿는 음악, 감성을 어루만져 주는 음악, 거침없는 흥분을 전하는 음악, 놀라움을 주는 멋진 음악으로 말이다. 그래서 산울림은 2024년 현재의 젊은이들에게도 유물이나 옛것이 아닌, 손을 뻗으면 닿는 곳에서 환한 빛을 발하며 순수한 즐거움의 에너지를 내뿜는 가슴 설레는 매혹이 될 수 있는 것이다.

이 프로젝트의 개요는 단순하다. 산울림의 데뷔작이 발매된 때로부터 50년이 되는 2027년 12월까지 산울림과 김창완, 김창훈의 작품 50곡을 후배 뮤지션과 밴드가 각자의 스타일로 재해석하는 것이다. 주목할 만한 두 가지 포인트가 있다. 일반적으로 트리뷰트 앨범을 기획하고 실행하는 주체는 레이블이나 레코드사, 다른 아티스트다. 헌정 또는 헌사의 대상이 스페셜 게스트 형식으로 참여하는 일이 있기는 해도 아티스트 본인이 주도하는 경우는 흔치 않다. 「산울림 50주년 기념 프로젝트」의 모든 걸 진두지휘한 인물은 김창훈이다. 그는 인지도를 지닌 아티스트 외에도 뛰어난 실력과 개성을 갖추었지만 덜 알려진 동시대의 밴드와 뮤지션을 산울림이라는 연결 고리를 통해 소개하고 싶었다. 참여 아티스트들이 한껏 상상력을 발휘하고 역량을 펼칠 수 있는 자그마한 장을 마련해 주고, 그럼으로써 과거에 속한 산울림의 음악은 현재의 감성을 바탕으로 한 새로운 사운드로 거듭난다. 산울림이 처음 녹음실에 들어갔을 때 음반사 사장이 프로듀서에게 밴드가 하는 모든 것에 일체 간섭하지 말라고 했던 것처럼, 김창훈은 재능 있는 후배들이 산울림이라는 재료로 어떤 옷을 만들어 내는지 즐거운 마음으로 지켜보았다. 또 하나 중요한 점은 이 프로젝트의 지속 기간이다. 「산울림 50주년」은 2023년 가을부터 데뷔 50년이 되는 시점까지 무려 4년에 걸쳐 진행되는 장기 프로젝트다. 매월 적어도 1곡 이상씩 꾸준히 싱글을 발매해야 한다. 그 동안 어떤 뮤지션이 어떤 곡을 어떻게 해석해 표현하고 어떤 신선한 감동을 선사할지, 또 그 과정에서 어떤 아티스트가 발굴될지 기대할 수 있다는 뜻이다.
