Listening to Thornapple's music, I keep getting the impression that something is strangely off. While expecting a familiar development, the pattern of abruptly making a sudden appearance is off, and after running unpredictably, it suddenly enters a stable phase and gives us a line that sticks to our ears. Thus, in their music, the speaker and the world he belongs to are repeatedly off and merged, and I think that this is where the core of Thornapple's music lies.
Their music is both a fracture and a unity. It can be said that it is music that draws pleasure from the swamp of sadness and depression. To put it a little grandly, their music sounds like it is in a permanent emergency. But they are suffering from this permanent emergency and enjoying it. Yes, it is a contradiction, an irony. As far as I know, all the fascinating stories in this world are filled with contradictions and ironies. For me, Thornapple's music is like that.
The lyrics are still full of symbols. There are many cases where you have to look closely at words and sentences. However, it is not to the point where you cannot understand the meaning. I think that the basic theme of their lyrics so far has been the breakdown of communication and the anxiety of existence. There is no change in the new album <Enlightenment>. However, it seems to have become more systemized. The parts that used to seem like nonsense have completely disappeared. The following lyrics of 'As it was above, so it is below' are indeed meaningful. "Lie down with your stomachs pressed close/We are all your kings/I'm finally tired/Throw the remaining bones over there/To the dog."
Moreover, some of the lyrics of 'February' seem to implicitly display the world of Thornapple.
“Turn your neck and look behind you/There are so many things you want to forget/Turn your body and look ahead/There are so many things you want to do”
But there is no need to label each word. If we do, the vitality itself will disappear. The story of music is a kind of black box. It is a living organism. Depending on who touches it, different stories pop out. Nevertheless, I think we can confirm that the frustration and longing for others and the world are colliding with each other. Thornapple, specifically the musician Yoon Seong-hyun, desperately desires communication, but ends up confining himself. He stares out the window even as he devours himself. Thus, the music he creates does not reach anywhere and is lacking, and it is this lack that creates the fascination of his music. Void and completion. It is a contradiction, after all.
The unique dense sound and three-dimensional song development method are quite firmly attached to the symbolic lyrics. Above all, they do not consume narrative tricks as shallow reversals or surprise parties. As mentioned earlier, Thornapple is combined while being out of sync. It is out of sync in the process of being combined. Listen to 'A Day of Mercury'. The lyrical melody appears first, and although it rushes in strongly, it draws a dramatic composition with fantastic tempo control. There is no unnatural feeling. It is thanks to the talent that knows how to exquisitely build a bridge between out of sync and combination.
Here's the bottom line. It has a good melody, and excellent rhythm. There are also lyrics that must have been written after much thought. These sometimes go against each other and sometimes come together, and they keep the listener going all the way to track 10. There's one more thing. I think a rock band's album should ultimately stimulate the listener's desire to see a live performance. That's one of my biggest criteria. After listening to the entire album, I wanted to see Thornapple's new songs live as soon as possible. I'm sure you will too.

쏜애플의 음악을 듣다 보면 자꾸 뭔가가 묘하게 어긋난다는 인상을 받는다. 익숙한 전개를 예상하는 와중에 갑툭튀를 시전하는 패턴이 어긋나고, 예측불허를 내달리다가도 갑자기 안정기에 접어들더니 귀에 쫙쫙 달라붙는 라인을 들려준다. 그리하여 그들의 음악에서는 화자와 그가 속한 세계가 어긋나고 합쳐짐을 반복하는데 여기에 쏜애플 음악의 핵심이 존재하는 게 아닐까 싶다.
그들의 음악은 균열인 동시에 통합이다. 슬픔과 우울의 늪에서 쾌락을 길어 올리는 음악이라고도 말할 수 있겠다. 좀 거창하게 표현하자면 그들의 음악은 영구적인 응급 상황에 처한 것처럼 들리기도 한다. 한데 그들은 이 영구적인 응급 상황에 고통스러워하면서도 그것을 향유한다. 그렇다. 모순이요, 아이러니다. 내가 아는 한, 이 세상의 모든 매력적인 이야기에는 모순과 아이러니가 서려있다. 나에게는 쏜애플의 음악이 그렇다.
상징으로 가득한 노랫말은 여전하다. 낱말과 문장을 골똘히 바라봐야 하는 경우가 잦다. 그럼에도 그 의미를 파악하지 못할 정도는 아니다. 지금껏 그들의 가사가 품어온 주제는 기본적으로 소통의 단절과 존재의 불안이었다고 본다. 신보 <계몽>에서도 변함은 없다. 다만 그것이 좀 더 체계화된 것처럼 보인다. 예전에는 횡설수설에 그쳤구나 싶었던 구석이 싹 사라졌다. ‘위에서도 그러했듯이 아래에서도’의 다음 가사는 과연 의미심장하다. “배를 바짝 붙이고 엎드려라/우리는 하나같이 너의 왕이니/마침내 질려버렸네/남은 뼈들은 저기/개한테 던져줘”.
더불어 ‘2월’의 노랫말 중 일부는 쏜애플의 세계를 함축적으로 전시하는 게 아닐까 싶다.
“목을 꺾어 뒤를 봐요/잊고 싶은 일들이 한 가득 있어/몸을 돌려 앞을 봐요/하고 싶은 일들이 한 가득 있어”
그렇다고 단어 하나하나에 라벨을 붙일 필요는 없다. 그러면 생명력 자체가 사라질 테니까. 음악이라는 이야기는 일종의 블랙 박스다. 생물이다. 누가 건드리느냐에 따라서 각기 다른 이야기가 튀어나온다. 그럼에도, 타인과 세계에 대한 좌절과 갈망이 서로 충돌하고 있다는 점만큼은 확언할 수 있을 것 같다. 쏜애플, 구체적으로 윤성현이라는 음악가는 소통을 간절히 바라면서도 자기를 끝내 유폐해버린다. 스스로를 갉아먹다가도 창문 너머를 응시한다. 그리하여 그가 창조한 음악은 어디에도 이르지 못하고 결여되는데 바로 이 결여됨으로써 자기 음악의 매혹을 일궈낸다. 공백과 완성. 역시나 모순이다.
특유의 밀도 있는 사운드와 입체적인 곡 전개 방식은 상징적인 가사와 함께 꽤나 단단하게 붙어있다. 무엇보다 그들은 서사적인 트릭을 얕은 반전이나 깜짝 파티 정도로 소비하지 않는다. 앞서도 언급했듯이 쏜애플은 어긋나는 와중에 합쳐진다. 합쳐지는 과정 속에서 어긋난다. ‘수성의 하루’를 들어보라. 서정적인 선율이 먼저 등장하고, 강렬하게 몰아치다가도 환상적인 완급조절로 드라마틱한 구성을 그려낸다. 부자연스러운 느낌이라고는 없다. 어긋남과 합쳐짐 사이에 절묘하게 다리를 놓을 줄 아는 재능 덕분이다.
결론이다. 좋은 선율이 있고, 탁월한 리듬이 있다. 깊은 고민 끝에 써졌을 것이 분명한 가사도 있다. 이것들은 때로 어긋나기도 하고 때로 합쳐지기도 하면서 듣는 이를 10번 트랙까지 쭉 끌고 간다. 하나 더 있다. 록 밴드의 앨범은 결국 듣는 이의 라이브 관람 욕구를 자극해야 한다고 생각한다. 나의 가장 큰 판단 기준 중에 하나다. 음반을 다 감상하고 난 뒤 나는 쏜애플의 신곡들을 하루 빨리 라이브로 보고 싶어졌다. 당신도 그럴 거라고 확신한다.
