When I was asked to write this piece, I didn't immediately accept. Since I can only recommend it to others if I truly feel something, I said I'd listen to the album first. After listening, I decided to write about it without much hesitation. The music really resonated with me.
Why did it resonate with me? We live in an age where countless songs are filled with plausible music. I believe there's a difference between plausible music and good music. Good music embodies honesty and originality. That's my belief. I felt the Shepherd Boys were pursuing both.
First of all, the lyrics conveyed a lot of personal struggles. Those who had passed puberty (from "Puberty") but weren't yet rock stars (from "Even If I Become a Rockstar, All I Need Is You"), seemed to strive to tell stories they couldn't tell otherwise. They also struggled to accurately express what was going on inside their hearts.
In terms of musical style, I felt like they inherited various traditions from rock and pop music. Rather than simply copying those traditions, they seemed to break them down into smaller pieces and meticulously reassemble them in their own unique way. They also play well. Honestly, I think good performance skills are a double-edged sword for a starting band. If misused, they can easily sound worn-out. However, Shepherd Boys' performances actually enhanced the youthful saturation of the music. I believe the Korean language is a wonderful instrument, and I liked the way they handled it. Oh, and there were a lot of songs that were great for everyone to have fun with at a rock festival.
Well, anyway, I'm saying I found it quite interesting. It's the first full-length album from a band that's starting off in a positive direction. I'm curious to see how they progress in the future. Why don't we watch together?

This song was written while looking outside the window at dawn, watching the things slowly starting their day.
I think it's really neat and wonderful to see nature starting its day.

02. Riding the Clouds
“On the left, dark clouds carrying rain continue to chase me, but over there, you are holding my hand and running towards the bright light!”
This song is about a boy's gratitude to the being who embraces him with a bright smile.
03. Is it fate?
When I meet someone who seems like my destiny, I want to say it's fate, but sometimes I start to doubt whether that's just my hasty delusion.
But what can I do? It's all fate.
04. Puberty
It depicts us, still in our adolescent state, living in a contradictory world.
We sacrificed our boyhood and girlhood to become adults, but in the end, we look up at the same sky, so that we can regain our childhood.
05. Even if I become a rock star, I only need you
It's all written in the title.
06. Intermission
Intermission: This term is mainly used today to refer to the break given before the next act begins in performances such as plays, operas, and musicals.
07. Break time
We think words are so important that, paradoxically, we want to say that even words are unnecessary.

I wrote this song for my birthday in April. This year's birthday felt somewhat dull, tedious, and boring. Honestly, I didn't really think much about my birthday, but it felt a little strange because it passed so meaninglessly.
So I imagined this.
If I, who celebrated my birthday in the past, were to travel across time and space to this year's birthday, wouldn't I be able to find some comfort and strength in seeing that friend (my past self)? Because that friend was more energetic, more original, and more curious than I am now.

이 글을 부탁받았을 때 바로 수락한 건 아닙니다. 내가 뭔가 진심으로 느낀 게 있어야 남에게 추천도 하는 거니까, 일단 앨범을 들어보겠다고 했죠. 들어본 후에는 별다른 고민 없이 쓰겠다고 했어요. 마음에 와닿는 음악이었거든요.
왜 와닿았을까. 그럴싸한 음악이 수도 없이 쏟아지는 시대입니다. 그럴싸한 음악과 좋은 음악은 다르다고 생각해요. 좋은 음악에는 솔직함과 독창성이 담겨 있다. 이게 제 생각입니다. 저는 양치기소년단이 그 두 가지를 다 추구하고 있다고 느꼈어요.
일단 가사에서는 개인적인 고민들이 많이 느껴졌습니다. 사춘기는 지났지만(<사춘기> 중에서) 아직 락스타(<락스타가 된대도 난 너만 있으면 돼> 중에서)는 되지 못한 이들이 딱 지금이 아니면 할 수 없는 이야기를 해보려 노력한 흔적이 보였어요. 마음속에서 벌어지는 일들을 되도록 정확히 표현하기 위해 애쓴 흔적도요.
음악의 스타일 면에서는 록과 가요의 여러 전통들을 다양하게 이어받고 있다고 느꼈는데, 전통을 그대로 가져다 쓰기보다는 되도록 잘게 쪼개 자신들만의 방식으로 정성껏 다시 조합하고자 한 것 같아요. 연주도 잘합니다. 사실 저는 시작하는 밴드에게 좋은 연주력은 양날의 검이라고 생각하는 편이에요. 자칫 잘못 활용하면 닳고 닳은 느낌이 나버리거든요. 하지만 양치기소년단은 자신들의 좋은 연주력으로 오히려 청춘의 채도를 높이고 있었어요. 저는 우리말이 하나의 훌륭한 악기라고 생각하는데, 그들이 그 악기를 다루는 방식도 마음에 들었습니다. 아, 그리고 록 페스티벌에서 다 같이 신나게 놀기 좋은 노래들도 많더라고요.
뭐, 아무튼 저는 상당히 재미나게 들었다는 얘기예요. 좋은 방향을 바라보며 출발하는 한 밴드의 첫 정규앨범입니다. 이들이 앞으로 어떻게 해나갈지 궁금하네요. 함께 지켜보면 어떨까요?

하루를 시작하려는 자연의 모습은 참 점잖고 멋진 것 같아요.
아침을 여는 라디오처럼 정규 1집 [우리] 시작으로 이 곡을 여러분께 선사합니다!

“왼쪽에선 먹구름이 비를 머금고 계속해서 나를 쫓아오는데 저쪽에선 네가 내 손을 잡고 밝은 빛으로 달려가네!”
온통 환한 미소로 나를 감싸 안아 주는 존재에 대한 소년의 감사함을 담은 곡입니다.

운명 같은 사람을 만나면 운명이라고 말하고 싶지만, 그것이 내 섣부른 망상은 아닐지 의심하게 될 때도 있죠.
근데 뭐 어쩌겠어요? 이 모든 것이 운명인걸요.

모순적인 세상에서 살아가는 여전히 사춘기 같은 우리의 모습을 그렸어요.
어른이 되기 위해 소년, 소녀 시절을 희생했지만 결국 같은 하늘을 바라보고 있는 우리가 다시 되찾을 어린 시절을 위해서요.

이 곡은 4월의 제 생일에 쓴 곡입니다. 올해 생일은 뭔가 무미건조하고, 힘들고, 재미없게 지나갔어요. 사실 생일에 대해 별생각은 없었는데 너무 의미 없이 지나니 조금 기분이 이상하긴 하더라고요.
그래서 이런 상상을 했어요.
과거의 생일을 맞았던 내가, 시공간을 넘어 올해 생일에 온다면 그 친구(과거의 나)를 보고 위안과 힘을 좀 더 얻을 수 있지 않을까? 하고요. 왜냐하면 그 친구는 지금의 나보다 더 활력 있고, 초심이 있고, 호기심이 있었기 때문이죠.
