The 2nd Shin Jung-hyeon Division, which was reactivated in 1980
The musical journey of Shin Jung-hyun, the godfather of Korean rock, took a turning point in 1975, when he was banned from performing due to the marijuana scandal. The Shin Jung-hyun Division, which had previously produced a large number of rising stars and newcomers, also disbanded. On December 6, 1979, as the new military regime took power, the bans on the activities of 123 entertainers, including singers, comedians, and film directors, for marijuana use were lifted. Amidst the thaw created by the "Seoul Spring," Shin Jung-hyun was freed from the shackles of his long ban. Through his comeback activities, he began to quench his musical thirst, which had lingered during those dark times.
The musical genres of the second Shin Jung-hyun Division, which emerged in the 1980s, were broadly divided between established singers who remade hits from before the 1975 ban and newcomers who released original compositions as albums. Among them were already established popular singers like Insooni, Kim Wan-sun, Lee Moon-sae, Jung Soo-ra, and Im Joo-ri. This demonstrates Shin Jung-hyun's expanded musical and popular reach compared to before the ban.
Shin Jeong-suk, a former member of the folk group Kkureogi formed by Kim Chang-wan
Shin Jung-sook, a rookie singer in the second Shin Jung-hyun Division, hails from the popular mixed folk group Kkureogi, formed by Kim Chang-wan. Her first solo album, a reissue of Shin Jung-hyun's "Shin Jung-hyun Works," was released in 1986, marking the first reissue in 40 years. Shin Jung-sook, who had admired songs like Lee Mi-ja's "Dongbaek Lady" since childhood, began dreaming of becoming a singer when she entered middle school. After graduating from high school, she began her career as an unknown singer on the stage of the Cherbourg live club in Myeongdong, Seoul. After honing her singing skills on downtown club stages, Shin Jung-sook made her official debut as a lyricist and composer before becoming a singer. The title track "Yeonminui Jeong," the B-side of Cherbourg-born singer Choi Sung-soo's debut album, "Choi Sung-soo's Young Songs Collection," released on September 1, 1984, is an original song written and composed by Shin Jung-sook.
As a singer, she debuted with the song "Sunset," composed by Oh Jun-young and written by Kim Jeong-ryul, on the soundtrack to the movie "A Submersible Bridge Is Visible Outside the Window," which was released 10 days after Choi Sung-soo's album. She then quietly continued her career by recording the folk song "Flower Beoseon" on the soundtrack to the play "Pumba," released in February 1985. Shin Jung-sook, then an unknown singer who had been performing mainly downtown, was recruited in 1985 as a member of the mixed folk project group "Kkureogi" formed by Sanulrim leader Kim Chang-wan. She released a hit album with Lim Ji-hoon and Choi Sung-soo, and her appearances on terrestrial broadcasting marked a turning point in her musical career.
The story of the album's production, recorded through a phone interview with Shin Jeong-suk from her hospital bed.
Curious about how Shin Jung-sook and Shin Jung-hyun met and the background story behind her recently re-released first solo album, I sought out her contact information. I obtained her number through fellow Cherbourg singer Namgung Ok-bun. I revealed that I had conducted a phone interview with Shin Jung-sook, who was lying in a hospital bed after a car accident. After working in a group, Shin Jung-sook approached King Records CEO Park Sung-bae (aka King Park) to pursue her solo career. "I went to King Records with my acoustic guitar and a demo tape of my own compositions, including 'You Are All Good.' King Park didn't know me well from my time as a member of Kkureogideul, but he invited me to an impromptu audition, asking me to sing and play the guitar. After hearing my song, he said, 'In addition to your own compositions, it would be a good idea to get a song from Shin Jung-hyun.' So, I sang [You Are Far Away], a song I'd loved since I was young, in front of Shin Jung-hyun, playing the guitar. He readily agreed, saying, 'I like your metallic voice tone. I don't usually work with guitarists, but I'll give you two songs.'" (Shin Jeong-sook)
After recording one or two songs, King Park suggested that Shin Jung-sook's original compositions be omitted and all songs be composed by Shin Jung-hyun, expanding the scope of the project to include a solo album. "During the recording process, I sang each song in the style Shin Jung-hyun desired. He had so many requests: 'Sing with your voice in your nose. Sing in a flat tone, without any emotion. Sing powerfully, pushing the Earth from the tip of your tongue.' Honestly, I wasn't completely satisfied with his style, as it wasn't my style, but I learned a lot. The truth is, if you pour too much emotion into a song, it quickly becomes boring. I applied the singing techniques I learned from him to my hit song [That Person Is Crying], and was able to sing in a calm, emotionless manner."
Shin Jung-hyun's new compositions, which explore cutting-edge computer sound.
Released by Seorabeol Records on December 20, 1986, Shin Jung-sook's first solo album contained ten tracks (excluding "Geonjeongyo"). While it didn't produce any new hits that would be remembered by the public, Shin Jung-hyun's efforts to innovate with the cutting-edge computer sounds popular at the time and his own musical idiom are impressive. The tracks on the two sides possess completely different musical styles. Overall, the tracks maintain a relaxed emotional tone with a typical dynamic arrangement. The front side consists of Shin Jung-hyun's newly created compositions, which explored the cutting-edge computer sounds popular at the time. "At the time, Shin Jung-hyun told me he was going to seriously experiment with computer sounds with me for the first time. Many people around me disliked it, saying it didn't suit me, but I found the new musical experiment exciting," Shin Jung-sook said.
The album's opening track, "Jom-deo," evokes the lyrical atmosphere expected of a folk singer, but its unconventional computer-generated sound shatters it. It's a lively dance track, a departure from Shin Jung-hyun's signature dramatic chord progression. The calm and emotional "When the Sunset Sets" and "Handle," which uses a child's voice as a sound effect, are followed by a playful and cute sound created with computer-generated sounds. Contrary to her image as a folk singer in the mixed folk group Kkureogi, Shin Jung-sook demonstrates a groundbreaking transformation, switching between falsetto and genuine vocals, even employing shouting techniques. In the familiar pop-style "Don't Forget," she showcases her unique interpretation of the song with a feminine vocal that departs from the tone of her previous songs. The upbeat "Let's Do It Together" concludes the album, maintaining a dynamic dynamic.
Songs on the front and back of the album have completely different musical colors.
Side 2 contains only [Passion] as a new song, while the rest of the songs are filled with the nostalgia of Shin Jung-hyun's brand of music, which attempts new arrangements of hit songs released before his ban. "I grew up listening to Shin Jung-hyun's music since I was little, so I liked rock. In fact, there are songs that I recorded but didn't make it onto the album. I liked Shin Jung-hyun's new song [Itaewon Love Song], but King Park left it out of the song selection, saying he would put it on the next album, which was a shame." (Shin Jung-sook) The first song, [What if I Leave], is originally [Space Travel], a song by Bunny Girls in 1970 that showcased a comical singing style that implemented echoing sound effects in space. Shin Jung-sook's version attempted a change with an arrangement that is slower and emphasizes the drum beat compared to the original.
The new song "Passion" showcases a speedy arrangement and powerful shouting vocal technique. "If You Have to Forget" was a hit song first covered by Kim Jung-mi in 1972, followed by Kim Chu-ja, Jang Hyun, Shin Jung-hyun, and Music Power, and then Lee Do-young in 1986. Shin Jung-sook attempted her own unique singing style, similar yet different from her predecessors, preserving the texture of the original while adding a wonderfully new atmosphere. In 1997, Love and Peace also joined the ranks of remakes. "Flower Petal" is one of Shin Jung-hyun's signature songs, having been covered by guest vocalist Lee Jung-hwa of Donkeys in 1969, followed by Kim Chu-ja, Jang Hyun, Lee Jong-sook, and Sinawi. The ending track "That Person", which retains the strong feeling of the original, was a hit song first covered by rookie singer Min-a in 1971, and then by mixed-race band Golden Grapes in 1972. Unlike the original song performed solo, Shin Jeong-sook added richness by rearranging the chorus.
His first solo album, which attracted attention late in his career after becoming a popular singer.
When Shin Jung-hyun's new musical endeavors were released, King Records expressed their enthusiasm, saying, "We're nurturing Shin Jung-sook into the next Kim Chu-ja." "Actually, King Records didn't really promote the album. Honestly, I didn't have much talent, so I didn't feel like I fit in with King Park's style, so I didn't go to the company much. Eventually, I felt a lingering attachment to my original compositions, so I returned to Daesung Records, where I'd worked during my Kkureogi days, and I wasn't able to properly promote the album I'd worked on with Mr. Shin." Afterwards, with the help of Kim Chang-wan, whom she had met during her time as a child singer, Shin Jung-sook released a series of solo albums on Daesung Records, but for a while, she failed to produce a hit. Having previously pursued both singing and songwriting, she moved to a music design agency and released a full-length album in 1990. Through this album, Shin Jung-sook experimented with diverse vocal styles. She shifted her vocal style from her established style to a clear and composed style, devoid of emotion. This led to belated hits with "That Love Is Crying" and "Riverside Story," which finally brought her widespread recognition. Shin Jung-sook's first solo album, a collection of Shin Jung-hyun's works, which had previously gone largely unnoticed, has only now begun to attract collectors' attention. 1980년 이후 다시 가동된 2기 신중현사단
한국 록의 대부 신중현의 음악여정은 1975년 대마초 파동으로 인한 활동금지로 전환기를 맞이한다. 이전까지 스타가수로 성장한 가수들과 신인가수들을 대거 발굴했던 신중현사단도 해단 수순을 밟았다. 신군부가 들어서기 시작한 1979년 12월 6일, 대마초 흡연 혐의로 활동이 규제된 가수, 코미디언, 영화감독 등 연예인 123명의 규제가 풀렸다. '서울의 봄'으로 불리며 조성된 해빙 분위기 속에 신중현은 오랜 활동금지의 족쇄에서 벗어났다. 신중현은 암울했던 시간의 음악적 갈증을 컴백활동을 통해 해갈하기 시작했다.
1980년대 이후 새롭게 가동했던 2기 신중현사단 가수들의 음악 장르는 크게 1975년 금지 이전 히트곡들을 리메이크하는 기성 가수들과 새로운 창작곡을 앨범 개념으로 발표하는 신인급 가수들로 양분되었다. 그 중에는 이미 인기가수의 반열에 올랐던 인순이, 김완선, 이문세, 정수라, 임주리 등이 포함되어 있다. 이는 활동금지 이전보다 음악적으로나 대중적으로 폭이 넓어진 신중현의 활동반경을 보여준다.
김창완이 결성한 포크그룹 꾸러기 출신 신정숙
2기 신중현사단의 신인급 가수 '신정숙'은 김창완이 결성해 인기를 누렸던 혼성 포크그룹 꾸러기들 출신이다. 그녀의 첫 독집인 이번 재발매 신중현작품집은 1986년 발표되었으니 무려 40년 만의 재발매이다. 어린 시절부터 이미자의 [동백아가씨] 같은 가요를 좋아했던 신정숙은 중학교에 입학하면서 가수의 꿈을 키우기 시작했다. 여고 졸업 후 서울 명동의 라이브 클럽 쉘부르 무대에서 무명가수 활동을 시작했다. 이후 다운타운가 클럽무대들을 통해 가창력을 배양했던 신정숙의 공식 데뷔는 가수보다 작사, 작곡자로 먼저 이뤄졌다. 1984년 9월 1일 발매된 쉘부르 출신가수 최성수의 데뷔음반 '최성수의 젊은노래모음'의 B면 타이틀곡 [연민의 정]은 신정숙이 작사 작곡한 창작곡이다.
가수로는 최성수 앨범보다 10일 늦게 발매된 영화「창밖에 잠수교가 보인다」OST에서 오준영 작곡, 김정률 작사의 [석양]을 부르며 데뷔를 했다. 이어 1985년 2월에 발매된 연극 품바 OST에서 민요 [꽃버선]을 취입하며 조용하게 활동을 이어갔다. 다운타운을 주 무대로 활동하던 무명가수 신정숙은 1985년 산울림 리더 김창완이 결성한 포크 프로젝트 혼성그룹 꾸러기들의 멤버로 영입되었다. 그녀는 임지훈, 최성수 등과 함께 앨범을 발표해 히트시키고 지상파 방송에 출연하면서 음악인생에 터닝 포인트를 마련했다.
병상의 신정숙과 전화인터뷰로 기록한 앨범제작 이야기
신정숙과 신중현은 어떻게 인연을 맺었는지 그리고 이번에 재발매된 그녀의 첫 솔로음반 제작배경 이야기가 궁금해 연락처를 수소문했다. 같은 쉘부르 출신가수 남궁옥분을 통해 그녀의 전화번호를 받았다. 마침 교통사고를 당해 병원 병실에 누워있던 신정숙과 전화인터뷰를 진행했음을 밝힌다. 그룹 활동을 했던 신정숙은 솔로가수로 독립하기 위해 킹레코드 박성배사장(일명 킹박)을 찾아갔다. “'당신은 모든 것이 좋아' 등 자작곡을 녹음한 데모 테이프와 통기타를 가지고 킹레코드를 찾아 갔어요. 킹박은 꾸러기들 멤버로 활동했던 저를 잘 모르셨는데 통기타를 연주하며 노래해보라며 즉석 오디션을 요청하셨어요. 제 노래를 듣고 나서 '본인 자작곡 외에 신중현 선생에게 곡을 받는 것이 좋겠다.'고 하셨어요. 그래서 신중현 선생님 앞에서 어릴 때부터 좋아했던 [님은 먼곳에]를 통기타를 치며 노래를 불렀죠. 선생님은 '쇠소리가 나는 목소리 톤이 마음에 들어 좋다. 통기타가수와는 작업하지 않지만 2곡을 주겠다.'고 선뜻 결정하셨어요.”(신정숙)
이후 한 두 곡 녹음을 하던 중 킹박의 제안으로 신정숙의 자작곡들은 빼고 전곡을 신중현 작품으로 선곡하는 독집제작으로 일이 커졌다. “녹음 작업 때 노래마다 신중현 선생님이 원하는 창법으로 불렀습니다. 선생님은 제게 '목소리를 코에다 걸고 노래하라. 여러 가지 감정을 빼고 덤덤하게 불러라. 지구를 밀듯이 소리를 끝에서부터 내면서 힘차게 불러라' 등 이것저것 요청이 정말 많으셨어요. 솔직히 제 스타일의 창법이 아닌지라 마음에 들지는 않았지만 많이 배우긴 했어요. 사실 노래에 감정을 너무 집어넣으면 금방 지루해 지거든요. 그때 선생님에게 배운 창법을 히트곡 [그 사람이 울고 있어요]에 도입해 감정을 빼고 담담하게 노래할 수 있었습니다.”
첨단 컴퓨터 음향을 시도한 신중현의 새로운 창작곡들
1986년 12월 20일 서라벌레코드에서 발매된 신정숙의 첫 솔로 앨범에는 총 10곡(건전가요 제외)이 수록되었다. 대중이 기억할 새로운 히트곡을 배출한 음반은 아니지만 동시대에 유행했던 첨단 컴퓨터 사운드와 자신의 음악 원형질에 변화를 시도했던 신중현의 노력은 인상적이다. 앞뒤면 수록곡들의 음악색채는 완전 다른 질감이다. 전반적으로 수록곡들은 전형적인 강약강약 배치로 감정의 이완을 유지한다. 1면은 당시 유행했던 첨단 컴퓨터 음향을 시도한 신중현의 새로운 창작곡들로 구성했다. “당시 신중현 선생님은 처음으로 저와 컴퓨터 음향을 본격적으로 시도하신다고 했어요. 주변에선 저하고 어울리지 않는 음악이라고 싫어하는 사람이 많았는데 저는 새로운 음악 시도가 재미있었습니다.”(신정숙)
앨범의 문을 여는 오프닝 곡 [좀더]는 포크가수를 염두에 두고 예상한 서정적인 분위기를 뽕뽕거리며 시작되는 파격적인 컴퓨터 음향이 사정없이 깨트린다. 신중현 특유의 드라마틱한 코드 진행과는 이질적인 경쾌한 댄스곡이다. 이어 차분하고 감성적인 <노을이 지면>과 어린아이 목소리가 효과음으로 사용된 [인형]은 컴퓨터 음향으로 구현된 독특한 사운드가 장난스럽고 귀여운 분위기를 연출한다. 포크 혼성그룹 꾸러기들에서 활동했던 포크가수 이미지와는 달리 신정숙은 가성과 진성을 넘나들며 샤우팅 창법까지 구사하는 파격적 변신을 들려준다. 익숙한 가요풍인 [잊지말아요]에서 이전 곡들에서 들려준 분위기와는 다른 여성적인 보컬에서 평범치 않은 곡 해석력을 지닌 보컬리스트로서의 매력이 발산한다. 빠른 분위기의 [함께 해봐요]는 강약 모드를 유지하며 1면을 마무리한다.
음악색채가 완전 다른 앞뒤면 수록곡들
2면은 [정열]만이 신곡이고 나머지 곡들은 활동금지 이전에 발표했던 히트곡에 새로운 편곡을 시도하는 신중현 브랜드 음악의 향수가 담겨 있다. “어릴 때부터 신중현 선생님 곡을 듣고 자라서 록을 좋아했어요. 사실 녹음은 했지만 음반에 실리지 않은 노래도 있어요. 신중현 선생님의 신곡 [이태원연가]가 저는 마음에 들었는데 킹박이 다음 앨범에 넣자며 선곡에서 빼버려 아쉬웠어요.”(신정숙) 첫 곡 [떠나면 어떻해]는 1970년 바니걸스가 우주에서 메아리치는 효과음을 구현한 코믹창법을 선보였던 [우주여행]이 원곡이다. 신정숙 버전은 원곡보다 더욱 느릿하고 드럼 비트를 강조하는 편곡으로 변화를 시도했다.
신곡 [정열]은 스피디한 편곡과 파워풀한 샤우팅 창법을 선보인다. [잊어야 한다면]은 1972년 김정미를 시작으로 김추자, 장현, 신중현과 뮤직파워에 이어 86년에도 이도영이 먼저 취입했던 히트곡이다. 신정숙은 이전 선배들과 비슷하면서도 다른 자신만의 창법을 시도해 원곡의 질감을 살리면서도 새로운 분위기를 근사하게 덧칠했다. 1997년에는 사랑과 평화도 리메이크 대열에 합류했다. [꽃잎]은 1969년 덩키스의 객원보컬 이정화를 시작으로 김추자, 장현, 이종숙, 시나위 등이 리메이크했던 신중현의 대표곡 중 하나이다. 원곡의 느낌이 강렬한 엔딩 곡 [그 사람아]는 1971년 신인가수 민아에 이어 1972년 혼혈밴드 골든 그레입스가 먼저 취입했던 히트곡이다. 신정숙은 솔로로 진행했던 원곡과는 달리 코러스를 새롭게 배치해 풍성함을 더했다.
인기가수가 된 이후 뒤늦게 관심을 모은 첫 독집
신중현의 새로운 음악시도가 담긴 앨범이 나오자 킹레코드는 '신정숙을 제2의 김추자로 키운다.'며 의욕을 보였다. “사실 킹에서 앨범 홍보를 제대로 하지 않았어요. 솔직히 저도 끼가 별로 없는지라 킹박 스타일과 맞지 않는 것 같아 회사에 잘 나가지도 않았습니다. 결국 자작곡들에 대한 미련이 남아 꾸러기들 시절에 작업했던 대성음반으로 다시 돌아가면서 신선생님과 작업한 앨범은 제대로 알리지도 못했습니다.”(신정숙)
이후 꾸러기들 시절에 인연을 맺었던 김창완의 도움으로 대성음반에서 솔로 앨범들을 연속 발표했지만 신정숙은 한동안 히트곡을 내지 못했다. 이에 가수와 작사가 활동을 병행했던 그녀는 뮤직디자인으로 소속사를 옮겨 1990년 정규앨범을 발표했다. 이 앨범작업을 통해 다채로운 창법을 시도했던 신정숙은 자신의 기존 창법이 아닌 감정을 뺀 맑고 덤덤한 보컬 스타일로 변화를 시도한 [그 사랑이 울고 있어요]와 [강변이야기]를 뒤늦게 히트시키며 비로소 대중적 지명도를 획득했다. 그 바람에 전혀 조명을 받지 못하고 사장된 신정숙의 첫 독집인 신중현작품집은 세월이 지나 뒤늦게 수집가들의 관심을 끌기 시작했다. 소량 제작되어 잘 보이질 않는 이 앨범은 지금은 수집가들이 탐내는 희귀음반으로 대접받고 있다. /최규성

The Shin Jung-hyun Division, which had previously produced a large number of rising stars and newcomers, also disbanded. On December 6, 1979, as the new military regime took power, the bans on the activities of 123 entertainers, including singers, comedians, and film directors, for marijuana use were lifted. The musical genres of the second Shin Jung-hyun Division, which emerged in the 1980s, were broadly divided between established singers who remade hits from before the 1975 ban and newcomers who released original compositions as albums. Among them were already established popular singers like Insooni, Kim Wan-sun, Lee Moon-sae, Jung Soo-ra, and Im Joo-ri. Shin Jeong-suk, a former member of the folk group Kkureogi formed by Kim Chang-wan
Shin Jung-sook, a rookie singer in the second Shin Jung-hyun Division, hails from the popular mixed folk group Kkureogi, formed by Kim Chang-wan. Her first solo album, a reissue of Shin Jung-hyun's "Shin Jung-hyun Works," was released in 1986, marking the first reissue in 40 years. Shin Jung-sook, who had admired songs like Lee Mi-ja's "Dongbaek Lady" since childhood, began dreaming of becoming a singer when she entered middle school. After graduating from high school, she began her career as an unknown singer on the stage of the Cherbourg live club in Myeongdong, Seoul. After honing her singing skills on downtown club stages, Shin Jung-sook made her official debut as a lyricist and composer before becoming a singer. The title track "Yeonminui Jeong," the B-side of Cherbourg-born singer Choi Sung-soo's debut album, "Choi Sung-soo's Young Songs Collection," released on September 1, 1984, is an original song written and composed by Shin Jung-sook.
As a singer, she debuted with the song "Sunset," composed by Oh Jun-young and written by Kim Jeong-ryul, on the soundtrack to the movie "A Submersible Bridge Is Visible Outside the Window," which was released 10 days after Choi Sung-soo's album. She then quietly continued her career by recording the folk song "Flower Beoseon" on the soundtrack to the play "Pumba," released in February 1985. Shin Jung-sook, then an unknown singer who had been performing mainly downtown, was recruited in 1985 as a member of the mixed folk project group "Kkureogi" formed by Sanulrim leader Kim Chang-wan. She released a hit album with Lim Ji-hoon and Choi Sung-soo, and her appearances on terrestrial broadcasting marked a turning point in her musical career.

Curious about how Shin Jung-sook and Shin Jung-hyun met and the background story behind her recently re-released first solo album, I sought out her contact information. I obtained her number through fellow Cherbourg singer Namgung Ok-bun. I revealed that I had conducted a phone interview with Shin Jung-sook, who was lying in a hospital bed after a car accident. After working in a group, Shin Jung-sook approached King Records CEO Park Sung-bae (aka King Park) to pursue her solo career. "I went to King Records with my acoustic guitar and a demo tape of my own compositions, including 'You Are All Good.' King Park didn't know me well from my time as a member of Kkureogideul, but he invited me to an impromptu audition, asking me to sing and play the guitar. After hearing my song, he said, 'In addition to your own compositions, it would be a good idea to get a song from Shin Jung-hyun.' So, I sang [You Are Far Away], a song I'd loved since I was young, in front of Shin Jung-hyun, playing the guitar. He readily agreed, saying, 'I like your metallic voice tone. I don't usually work with guitarists, but I'll give you two songs.'" (Shin Jeong-sook)
After recording one or two songs, King Park suggested that Shin Jung-sook's original compositions be omitted and all songs be composed by Shin Jung-hyun, expanding the scope of the project to include a solo album. "During the recording process, I sang each song in the style Shin Jung-hyun desired. He had so many requests: 'Sing with your voice in your nose. Sing in a flat tone, without any emotion. Sing powerfully, pushing the Earth from the tip of your tongue.' Honestly, I wasn't completely satisfied with his style, as it wasn't my style, but I learned a lot. The truth is, if you pour too much emotion into a song, it quickly becomes boring. I applied the singing techniques I learned from him to my hit song [That Person Is Crying], and was able to sing in a calm, emotionless manner."
Shin Jung-hyun's new compositions, which explore cutting-edge computer sound.
Released by Seorabeol Records on December 20, 1986, Shin Jung-sook's first solo album contained ten tracks (excluding "Geonjeongyo"). While it didn't produce any new hits that would be remembered by the public, Shin Jung-hyun's efforts to innovate with the cutting-edge computer sounds popular at the time and his own musical idiom are impressive. The tracks on the two sides possess completely different musical styles. Overall, the tracks maintain a relaxed emotional tone with a typical dynamic arrangement. The front side consists of Shin Jung-hyun's newly created compositions, which explored the cutting-edge computer sounds popular at the time. "At the time, Shin Jung-hyun told me he was going to seriously experiment with computer sounds with me for the first time. Many people around me disliked it, saying it didn't suit me, but I found the new musical experiment exciting," Shin Jung-sook said.
The album's opening track, "Jom-deo," evokes the lyrical atmosphere expected of a folk singer, but its unconventional computer-generated sound shatters it. It's a lively dance track, a departure from Shin Jung-hyun's signature dramatic chord progression. The calm and emotional "When the Sunset Sets" and "Handle," which uses a child's voice as a sound effect, are followed by a playful and cute sound created with computer-generated sounds. Contrary to her image as a folk singer in the mixed folk group Kkureogi, Shin Jung-sook demonstrates a groundbreaking transformation, switching between falsetto and genuine vocals, even employing shouting techniques. In the familiar pop-style "Don't Forget," she showcases her unique interpretation of the song with a feminine vocal that departs from the tone of her previous songs. The upbeat "Let's Do It Together" concludes the album, maintaining a dynamic dynamic.
Songs on the front and back of the album have completely different musical colors.

"If You Have to Forget" was a hit song first covered by Kim Jung-mi in 1972, followed by Kim Chu-ja, Jang Hyun, Shin Jung-hyun, and Music Power, and then Lee Do-young in 1986. Shin Jung-sook attempted her own unique singing style, similar yet different from her predecessors, preserving the texture of the original while adding a wonderfully new atmosphere. In 1997, Love and Peace also joined the ranks of remakes. "Flower Petal" is one of Shin Jung-hyun's signature songs, having been covered by guest vocalist Lee Jung-hwa of Donkeys in 1969, followed by Kim Chu-ja, Jang Hyun, Lee Jong-sook, and Sinawi. The ending track "That Person", which retains the strong feeling of the original, was a hit song first covered by rookie singer Min-a in 1971, and then by mixed-race band Golden Grapes in 1972. Unlike the original song performed solo, Shin Jeong-sook added richness by rearranging the chorus.

Through this album, Shin Jung-sook experimented with diverse vocal styles. She shifted her vocal style from her established style to a clear and composed style, devoid of emotion. This led to belated hits with "That Love Is Crying" and "Riverside Story," which finally brought her widespread recognition. 한국 록의 대부 신중현의 음악여정은 1975년 대마초 파동으로 인한 활동금지로 전환기를 맞이한다. 이전까지 스타가수로 성장한 가수들과 신인가수들을 대거 발굴했던 신중현사단도 해단 수순을 밟았다. 신군부가 들어서기 시작한 1979년 12월 6일, 대마초 흡연 혐의로 활동이 규제된 가수, 코미디언, 영화감독 등 연예인 123명의 규제가 풀렸다. '서울의 봄'으로 불리며 조성된 해빙 분위기 속에 신중현은 오랜 활동금지의 족쇄에서 벗어났다. 신중현은 암울했던 시간의 음악적 갈증을 컴백활동을 통해 해갈하기 시작했다.
1980년대 이후 새롭게 가동했던 2기 신중현사단 가수들의 음악 장르는 크게 1975년 금지 이전 히트곡들을 리메이크하는 기성 가수들과 새로운 창작곡을 앨범 개념으로 발표하는 신인급 가수들로 양분되었다. 그 중에는 이미 인기가수의 반열에 올랐던 인순이, 김완선, 이문세, 정수라, 임주리 등이 포함되어 있다. 이는 활동금지 이전보다 음악적으로나 대중적으로 폭이 넓어진 신중현의 활동반경을 보여준다.
김창완이 결성한 포크그룹 꾸러기 출신 신정숙
2기 신중현사단의 신인급 가수 '신정숙'은 김창완이 결성해 인기를 누렸던 혼성 포크그룹 꾸러기들 출신이다. 그녀의 첫 독집인 이번 재발매 신중현작품집은 1986년 발표되었으니 무려 40년 만의 재발매이다. 어린 시절부터 이미자의 [동백아가씨] 같은 가요를 좋아했던 신정숙은 중학교에 입학하면서 가수의 꿈을 키우기 시작했다. 여고 졸업 후 서울 명동의 라이브 클럽 쉘부르 무대에서 무명가수 활동을 시작했다. 이후 다운타운가 클럽무대들을 통해 가창력을 배양했던 신정숙의 공식 데뷔는 가수보다 작사, 작곡자로 먼저 이뤄졌다. 1984년 9월 1일 발매된 쉘부르 출신가수 최성수의 데뷔음반 '최성수의 젊은노래모음'의 B면 타이틀곡 [연민의 정]은 신정숙이 작사 작곡한 창작곡이다.
가수로는 최성수 앨범보다 10일 늦게 발매된 영화「창밖에 잠수교가 보인다」OST에서 오준영 작곡, 김정률 작사의 [석양]을 부르며 데뷔를 했다. 이어 1985년 2월에 발매된 연극 품바 OST에서 민요 [꽃버선]을 취입하며 조용하게 활동을 이어갔다. 다운타운을 주 무대로 활동하던 무명가수 신정숙은 1985년 산울림 리더 김창완이 결성한 포크 프로젝트 혼성그룹 꾸러기들의 멤버로 영입되었다. 그녀는 임지훈, 최성수 등과 함께 앨범을 발표해 히트시키고 지상파 방송에 출연하면서 음악인생에 터닝 포인트를 마련했다.
병상의 신정숙과 전화인터뷰로 기록한 앨범제작 이야기
신정숙과 신중현은 어떻게 인연을 맺었는지 그리고 이번에 재발매된 그녀의 첫 솔로음반 제작배경 이야기가 궁금해 연락처를 수소문했다. 같은 쉘부르 출신가수 남궁옥분을 통해 그녀의 전화번호를 받았다. 마침 교통사고를 당해 병원 병실에 누워있던 신정숙과 전화인터뷰를 진행했음을 밝힌다. 그룹 활동을 했던 신정숙은 솔로가수로 독립하기 위해 킹레코드 박성배사장(일명 킹박)을 찾아갔다. “'당신은 모든 것이 좋아' 등 자작곡을 녹음한 데모 테이프와 통기타를 가지고 킹레코드를 찾아 갔어요. 킹박은 꾸러기들 멤버로 활동했던 저를 잘 모르셨는데 통기타를 연주하며 노래해보라며 즉석 오디션을 요청하셨어요. 제 노래를 듣고 나서 '본인 자작곡 외에 신중현 선생에게 곡을 받는 것이 좋겠다.'고 하셨어요. 그래서 신중현 선생님 앞에서 어릴 때부터 좋아했던 [님은 먼곳에]를 통기타를 치며 노래를 불렀죠. 선생님은 '쇠소리가 나는 목소리 톤이 마음에 들어 좋다. 통기타가수와는 작업하지 않지만 2곡을 주겠다.'고 선뜻 결정하셨어요.”(신정숙)
이후 한 두 곡 녹음을 하던 중 킹박의 제안으로 신정숙의 자작곡들은 빼고 전곡을 신중현 작품으로 선곡하는 독집제작으로 일이 커졌다. “녹음 작업 때 노래마다 신중현 선생님이 원하는 창법으로 불렀습니다. 선생님은 제게 '목소리를 코에다 걸고 노래하라. 여러 가지 감정을 빼고 덤덤하게 불러라. 지구를 밀듯이 소리를 끝에서부터 내면서 힘차게 불러라' 등 이것저것 요청이 정말 많으셨어요. 솔직히 제 스타일의 창법이 아닌지라 마음에 들지는 않았지만 많이 배우긴 했어요. 사실 노래에 감정을 너무 집어넣으면 금방 지루해 지거든요. 그때 선생님에게 배운 창법을 히트곡 [그 사람이 울고 있어요]에 도입해 감정을 빼고 담담하게 노래할 수 있었습니다.”
첨단 컴퓨터 음향을 시도한 신중현의 새로운 창작곡들
1986년 12월 20일 서라벌레코드에서 발매된 신정숙의 첫 솔로 앨범에는 총 10곡(건전가요 제외)이 수록되었다. 대중이 기억할 새로운 히트곡을 배출한 음반은 아니지만 동시대에 유행했던 첨단 컴퓨터 사운드와 자신의 음악 원형질에 변화를 시도했던 신중현의 노력은 인상적이다. 앞뒤면 수록곡들의 음악색채는 완전 다른 질감이다. 전반적으로 수록곡들은 전형적인 강약강약 배치로 감정의 이완을 유지한다. 1면은 당시 유행했던 첨단 컴퓨터 음향을 시도한 신중현의 새로운 창작곡들로 구성했다. “당시 신중현 선생님은 처음으로 저와 컴퓨터 음향을 본격적으로 시도하신다고 했어요. 주변에선 저하고 어울리지 않는 음악이라고 싫어하는 사람이 많았는데 저는 새로운 음악 시도가 재미있었습니다.”(신정숙)
앨범의 문을 여는 오프닝 곡 [좀더]는 포크가수를 염두에 두고 예상한 서정적인 분위기를 뽕뽕거리며 시작되는 파격적인 컴퓨터 음향이 사정없이 깨트린다. 신중현 특유의 드라마틱한 코드 진행과는 이질적인 경쾌한 댄스곡이다. 이어 차분하고 감성적인 <노을이 지면>과 어린아이 목소리가 효과음으로 사용된 [인형]은 컴퓨터 음향으로 구현된 독특한 사운드가 장난스럽고 귀여운 분위기를 연출한다. 포크 혼성그룹 꾸러기들에서 활동했던 포크가수 이미지와는 달리 신정숙은 가성과 진성을 넘나들며 샤우팅 창법까지 구사하는 파격적 변신을 들려준다. 익숙한 가요풍인 [잊지말아요]에서 이전 곡들에서 들려준 분위기와는 다른 여성적인 보컬에서 평범치 않은 곡 해석력을 지닌 보컬리스트로서의 매력이 발산한다. 빠른 분위기의 [함께 해봐요]는 강약 모드를 유지하며 1면을 마무리한다.
음악색채가 완전 다른 앞뒤면 수록곡들
2면은 [정열]만이 신곡이고 나머지 곡들은 활동금지 이전에 발표했던 히트곡에 새로운 편곡을 시도하는 신중현 브랜드 음악의 향수가 담겨 있다. “어릴 때부터 신중현 선생님 곡을 듣고 자라서 록을 좋아했어요. 사실 녹음은 했지만 음반에 실리지 않은 노래도 있어요. 신중현 선생님의 신곡 [이태원연가]가 저는 마음에 들었는데 킹박이 다음 앨범에 넣자며 선곡에서 빼버려 아쉬웠어요.”(신정숙) 첫 곡 [떠나면 어떻해]는 1970년 바니걸스가 우주에서 메아리치는 효과음을 구현한 코믹창법을 선보였던 [우주여행]이 원곡이다. 신정숙 버전은 원곡보다 더욱 느릿하고 드럼 비트를 강조하는 편곡으로 변화를 시도했다.
신곡 [정열]은 스피디한 편곡과 파워풀한 샤우팅 창법을 선보인다. [잊어야 한다면]은 1972년 김정미를 시작으로 김추자, 장현, 신중현과 뮤직파워에 이어 86년에도 이도영이 먼저 취입했던 히트곡이다. 신정숙은 이전 선배들과 비슷하면서도 다른 자신만의 창법을 시도해 원곡의 질감을 살리면서도 새로운 분위기를 근사하게 덧칠했다. 1997년에는 사랑과 평화도 리메이크 대열에 합류했다. [꽃잎]은 1969년 덩키스의 객원보컬 이정화를 시작으로 김추자, 장현, 이종숙, 시나위 등이 리메이크했던 신중현의 대표곡 중 하나이다. 원곡의 느낌이 강렬한 엔딩 곡 [그 사람아]는 1971년 신인가수 민아에 이어 1972년 혼혈밴드 골든 그레입스가 먼저 취입했던 히트곡이다. 신정숙은 솔로로 진행했던 원곡과는 달리 코러스를 새롭게 배치해 풍성함을 더했다.
인기가수가 된 이후 뒤늦게 관심을 모은 첫 독집
신중현의 새로운 음악시도가 담긴 앨범이 나오자 킹레코드는 '신정숙을 제2의 김추자로 키운다.'며 의욕을 보였다. “사실 킹에서 앨범 홍보를 제대로 하지 않았어요. 솔직히 저도 끼가 별로 없는지라 킹박 스타일과 맞지 않는 것 같아 회사에 잘 나가지도 않았습니다. 결국 자작곡들에 대한 미련이 남아 꾸러기들 시절에 작업했던 대성음반으로 다시 돌아가면서 신선생님과 작업한 앨범은 제대로 알리지도 못했습니다.”(신정숙)
이후 꾸러기들 시절에 인연을 맺었던 김창완의 도움으로 대성음반에서 솔로 앨범들을 연속 발표했지만 신정숙은 한동안 히트곡을 내지 못했다. 이에 가수와 작사가 활동을 병행했던 그녀는 뮤직디자인으로 소속사를 옮겨 1990년 정규앨범을 발표했다. 이 앨범작업을 통해 다채로운 창법을 시도했던 신정숙은 자신의 기존 창법이 아닌 감정을 뺀 맑고 덤덤한 보컬 스타일로 변화를 시도한 [그 사랑이 울고 있어요]와 [강변이야기]를 뒤늦게 히트시키며 비로소 대중적 지명도를 획득했다. 그 바람에 전혀 조명을 받지 못하고 사장된 신정숙의 첫 독집인 신중현작품집은 세월이 지나 뒤늦게 수집가들의 관심을 끌기 시작했다. 소량 제작되어 잘 보이질 않는 이 앨범은 지금은 수집가들이 탐내는 희귀음반으로 대접받고 있다. /최규성

※ 재생 불량
1) 톤암 혹은 무게 조절 기능이 없는 턴테이블을 사용하시는 경우, (주로 올인원 형태 모델) 다이내믹 사운드의 편차가 큰 트랙을 재생할 때 튀는 현상이 발생할 수 있는데 이는 대부분 가벼운 톤암 무게가 원인입니다.
기기 문제로 인해 발생하는 재생 불량 현상에 대해서는 반품/교환이 불가하니 톤암 조절이 가능한 기기에서 재생하실 것을 권유 드립니다.
2) 디스크는 정전기와 먼지로 인해 재생이 원활하지 않은 경우가 있습니다. 전용 제품으로 이를 제거하면 대부분 해결됩니다.
3) 바늘에 먼지가 쌓이는 경우에도 재생이 원활하지 않을 수 있습니다.
※ 디스크 이상
1) 디스크 표면이 울렁거리거나 휘어지는 경우가 있습니다. 재생에 이상이 있는 경우에만 반품이나 교환이 가능합니다.
2) 재생 음역의 왜곡을 최소화하고 반복 재생 시에도 최대한 일관되게 유지되도록 디스크 센터 홀 구경이 작게 제작되는 경우가 있습니다. 턴테이블 스핀들에 맞지 않는 경우에는 전용 제품 등을 이용하여 센터 홀을 조정하시면 해결됩니다.
3) 간혹 디스크에 미세한 잔흠집이 남아있거나 마감이 깨끗하지 않은 경우가 있습니다. 재생에 이상이 있는 경우에만 반품이나 교환이 가능합니다.

1) 컬러 디스크는 웹 이미지와 실제 색상이 차이가 날 수 있습니다.
