'Questions' of a Curious Person: Quri [Sing It Like A Hit]
I vividly remember the title of the first album released by Quri, the keyboardist and singer-songwriter of the band Moscow Surfing Club: *In Search of the Only Weapon*. The harmonious dissonance between the soft album cover—which wouldn't look out of place displayed as a postcard or sticker in a trendy boutique—and the intense slogan, which was quite different from the music that, at least on the surface, seemed to gently drift away, was not easily forgotten. Looking back now, it was a phrase that any creator staking their name on releasing something unprecedented in the world had likely harbored in their heart at least once. Once the shadow cast by the word "weapon" was lifted, a transparent desire for something I possessed—something only I could show—was fully revealed. In short, Quri was a person with a natural talent for pursuing "something of my own," which is the necessary and sufficient condition for being a creator.
The album [Sing It Like A Hit] adds another talent to Quri's innate nature: the fact that Quri is someone who never stops questioning anything. The album title itself reflects this. "Sing It Like A Hit"—meaning "sing it like a hit song"—is an invitation that, at first glance, doesn't seem to fit well with the music filling the album. Placing before us a work that resembles the commonly described "indie pop album composed colorfully with one's own unique style"—featuring familiar bossanova rhythms, whispering indietronica sounds, and pop sensibilities that have surely been encountered somewhere before—Quri asks: "Why can't this be a hit like K-pop?" In fact, the keyword "K-pop" is the concept Quri explored most deeply while creating this album. What is K-pop? What is mass success? What does it mean to become a star through music? And is it possible to tap into all of these things with the innate talents flowing within me, and finally open them up?
Quri’s desire to dive into the public eye while embracing only "what is uniquely his own" is clearly evident from the very first track, "I’m Going to Make Music." The message, flowing over swaying bossanova rhythms and light flute melodies, is a steadfast declaration that while he has listened slightly to the tastes of the world, he intends to make his own music using his own unique weapons. Quri’s swaying voice, saying "I don’t want to know too much," "I’m going to do cheap labor," and "I’m going to make music that isn’t even sacred," reflects a long-held yearning for the things born in his studio every night, as much as it reflects that honesty. The following title track, "Dark Chocolate," along with "Hide Me" located in the latter part of the album, serves as proof that his questions are not entirely unfounded. Leisurely inheriting the sensibility of good songs released since the 2000s—often referred to as "indie pop"—the song comfortably guides the listener’s ears and heart to the virtues of pop, from the lyrics to the melody.
If only the polished parts had stood out, [Sing It Like A Hit] might have ended up being the kind of album that simply brushes past the listener's eardrums. What adds color to the album are the tracks in which singer-songwriter Quri is fully infused. For example, songs like "Cicada Pond" or "Such a Heart." "Without an Angel," which follows "Cicada Pond," is a song that closely resembles Quri, who hails from Jeju. Cicada Pond, a pond located in Seogwipo, Jeju, and also the name of Quri's studio, is a place of healing where, amidst the chaotic city life, Quri can finally be her truest self. "Such a Heart" brings to the forefront the sensation of not being fully contained within the category of "woman." It conveys a somewhat detached feeling of being a woman, yet not a "complete woman." A confession that is by no means easy, even if one thinks it is nothing special, flows naturally in step with the simple instrumentation created by the synthesizer, piano, and cello.
At this point, the question "why" resurfaces. Within [Sing It Like A Hit], Quri never stops asking the question "why." The phrase "Why are you so curious about so many things?" is also what Quri hears most often. Whether it is music, stories, seeking answers, or simply melting away into the air as an empty cry. What matters is the time of now, the place of here, where one can muster the courage to ask "why." Why do I want to make my own music? And why must I be me? Amidst the pouring ontological questions, Quri's music flows endlessly and leisurely. Before the repeated questions within that flow, the names Quri has loved—Mot, Han Hee-jung, Jo Wol, Kim Sa-wol, Sabina & Drones, and others—stand quietly. The "questions" carved and molded by Quri, the questioner, pile up softly like snow falling on a "roof with holes where even snow does not accumulate" ("Hole"). How many songs and albums lie ahead of him? This album, [Sing It Like A Hit], is like the first step of that long and arduous journey.

Quri [Sing It Like A Hit]
[Sing It Like A Hit]는 그런 Quri의 타고남에 재능 하나를 더한다. 'Sing It Like A Hit',
[Sing It Like A Hit]는 어쩌면 듣는 이의 고막을 쉽게 스쳐 지나가는 그런 종류의 앨범이 되어버렸을지도 모르겠다.
[Sing It Like A Hit] 안에서, Quri는 '왜'라는 질문을 던지는 걸 한 번도 멈추지 않는다. [Sing It Like A Hit]이다.
