Description (Translated):

This is the first full-length album by pianist and composer Lee Mi-young's trio. It features the precise positioning of Lee Mi-young, bassist Lim Song-hyuk, and drummer Moon Sae-rop; a thoughtfulness that keeps listeners from losing the familiarity of the songs while running parallel to the melodies; and a sense of balance that does not lose the unique character of the performance. This brilliant sensibility stems from the "optimism with reason" that permeates the entire album. Unconditional admiration for life is fragile. However, the facets of life that Lee Mi-young conveys through her music are all connected by small but certain positivity.

Lee Mi-young neither emphasizes flashy pianism nor imbues it with static notes. Instead, she possesses the flexibility to appropriately adjust her musical color to suit the piece. At the same time, the hues of her music are like a filter that captures the world with warmth, no matter how the photograph is taken. This delightful music has arrived like a bundle of photos discovered by chance after a long time of forgetting. Lee Mi-young has carefully selected specific moments of life to present before us. Perhaps this is something we have been searching for for a long time, unaware that it was already close at hand.

And Lee Mi-young released exactly what she had been searching for, after undergoing the delicate mixing and mastering of Kim Ju-hwan at Laura Records. Even before this, albums released by Laura Records possessed not only a distinct musical direction but also a blueprint for sound. For instance, the Bae Min-hyuk Trio's [To Begin From The Beginning] delivered an authentic jazz guitar sound based on the Gibson ES-175CC, fluidly traversing between traditional and modern styles; the Kang Jae-hoon Trio's [Mean What You Say] showcased the intimate acoustic sound of straight-ahead jazz alongside bassist Park Jin-kyo and drummer Evan Sherman. Guitarist Tak Kyung-ju's [You Are Too Beautiful] blended a beautiful ballad with elegant and delicate instrumentation. Furthermore, the featuring by vocalist Lim Chae-hee and Kim Ju-hwan was intimate and profound, reminiscent of the small-ensemble guitar-vocal recordings from the past Pablo label.

Compared to traditional acoustic sounds, the music of the Lee Mi-young Trio is more modern and meticulously refined. Much like Brad Mehldau's 2005 trio album *Day is Done* on the Nonsuch label, the piano image recedes slightly into the background; while positioned parallel to the drums and bass, they seem to gently envelop the piano sound. The touch is transparent, and the details of the drums are more pronounced. This sound design is well-suited to revealing Lee Mi-young's unique style, which incorporates diverse musical elements such as jazz, pop, and blues. It also demonstrates the producer's capability to present the artist's intentions without distortion. Through this, the performer's unmistakable sincerity is conveyed to us. Laura Records imprints a new standard sound for every album. This is akin to creating a new answer sheet for each artist, rather than simply holding a single answer key and fitting different artists' music onto it. Let us take a closer look at this spirit, perfected through the collaboration of Lee Mi-young and Laura Records.

The first track, 'Anticipation,' begins with upbeat drums and paints a pleasant sense of anticipation. The drumming, which settles precisely into the ear with minimal reverberation, meets the transparent piano to accurately shape the music. Lee Mi-young reportedly asked the audience who listened to the song what came to mind. Although the answers varied, they all agreed on one thing: "a pleasant premonition right before something wonderful happens." Such anticipation naturally blends into the song. It is the perfect track to kick off the album.

The following track, 'Silk & Soul,' was created with the hope that it would serve as a source of rest at various points in daily life. The smoothly flowing melody gently relaxes a hardened heart and brings a sense of comfort. Lee Mi-young's music does not originate from grandiose sources. Just as one feels comfort listening to music while lying on a dermatologist's bed, she simply hopes this music will become a place to rest. Music does not need to take one to places in life that have never been experienced. Every piece of music has its own place, and what matters more is that this place is not a false one. In this sense, Lee Mi-young's music illuminates the place of life without embellishment or deception.

'Soft Focus' is a song inspired by the bright and fluffy warmth depicted in Disney animations. Lee Mi-young even went on a nationwide tour featuring Disney music, demonstrating that she did not merely superficially accept the Disney world to create impressions, but rather deeply assimilated it in her own unique way. The rhythm and melody, which never lose their cheerfulness, are warm and hopeful, much like unraveling the unfinished story of the jazz standard 'Someday My Prince Will Come,' which originated from the Disney animation *Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs*.

'Bride Ashley' is a record of a magical moment. An audience member who heard Lee Mi-young's music asked her to play it as their entrance piece at their wedding. To borrow her words, is there any greater blessing for a musician than becoming the background music for the most radiant moment of someone's life? I may never fully understand that glory and blessing, but thanks to this music, I can at least get a glimpse of it. Lee Mi-young said of this moment, "I am so glad I chose music," and I would like to return this sentiment: I am so glad I listened to this music.

"Sugar Rush Stomp," which recalls a day spent alone with a nephew, paints a picture of an aunt struggling somewhat to keep up with her nephew's energy, but that is all that matters. The time spent waddling and chasing after the nephew is fully infused into the rhythm and melody. The energetic dynamics and Song-Hyuk Lim's bass solo make the memories held within the song even deeper and more colorful. "Myong's Blues" is a track that fully captures Lee Mi-young's bright energy. While blues usually brings to mind a weighty and heavy groove, her blues is lively. This musical consistency clearly reveals the musician's personality—an undeniable cheerfulness.

The final track, 'The Calling Heart,' tells the story of hearts that summon each other without words. As Moon Sae-rop's brushstrokes scatter like mist to create texture, and the bass resonates deeply and precisely, Lee Mi-young appears calmer and more serious. Yet, she presses the keys without letting go of the heart that still shines brightly. Passing through warmth, vitality, and cheerfulness, she is a musician who slowly, finally, opens up her true feelings. Lee Mi-young's music begins anew at the end.

피아니스트이자 작곡가 이미영의 트리오 첫 정규 앨범이다. 이미영, 베이시스트 임송혁, 드러머 문새롭의 정교한 위치 선정, 멜로디와 나란히 가면서 곡이 지닌 친숙함을 듣는 이들로 하여금 잃지 않게 돕는 사려 깊음, 그러면서도 연주의 고유함을 놓치지 않는 균형감. 이 빛나는 감각은 앨범 전반에 감도는 '이유 있는 낙관'에 기인한다. 삶에 대한 무조건적인 찬탄은 무너지기 쉽다. 하지만 이미영이 음악을 통해 들려주는 삶의 면면은 모두 작지만 확실한 긍정으로 연결되어 있다.

이미영은 화려한 피아니즘을 내세우지도, 그렇다고 적은 음으로 정적인 피아니즘을 새기지도 않는다. 대신 곡에 맞게 자신의 색채를 적절히 조절할 줄 아는 유연함을 지녔다. 동시에 그가 지닌 음악의 빛깔은 어떻게 사진을 찍어도 세상이 좀 더 따뜻하게 담기는 필터와 같다. 이 기분 좋은 음악이 오래 잊고 지내다 우연히 발견한 사진 꾸러미처럼 찾아왔다. 이미영은 삶의 어떤 순간을 고르고 골라 우리 앞에 내놓았다. 이는 우리가 가까이 있는지 모르고 긴 시간 찾고 있던 것일지도 모른다.

그리고 그렇게 찾고 있던 걸 이미영은 로라 레코드 김주환의 섬세한 믹싱과 마스터링을 거쳐 내놓았다. 그전부터 로라 레코드에서 나온 앨범들은 저마다 확실한 음악적 방향성뿐만 아니라 소리의 설계도를 가지고 있었다. 이를테면 배민혁 트리오의 [To Begin From The Beginning]는 깁슨 ES-175CC를 기반으로 트래디셔널과 모던을 유연하게 넘나들며 정통 재즈 기타 사운드를 들려줬고, 강재훈 트리오의 [Mean What You Say]는 베이시스트 박진교, 드러머 에반 셔먼과 함께 스트레이트-어헤드 재즈의 내밀한 어쿠스틱 사운드를 선보였다. 기타리스트 탁경주의 [You Are Too Beautiful]은 아름다운 발라드 곡을 유려하고 섬세한 연주로 녹여냈다. 거기에 보컬리스트 임채희와 김주환의 피처링은 과거 파블로 레이블에서 소편성의 기타-보컬 녹음처럼 내밀하고 깊었다.

이번 이미영 트리오의 음악은 전통적인 어쿠스틱 사운드에 비해 좀 더 현대적이고 세심하게 다듬어져 있다. 브래드 멜다우가 2005년에 논서치 레이블에서 발매한 트리오 앨범 [Day is Done]처럼 피아노의 음상이 살짝 뒤에 물러나 있고 드럼과 베이스와 평행한 위치에 있지만 그 둘이 피아노 소리를 약간 감싸주는 듯하다. 타건은 투명하고 드럼의 디테일이 더욱 두드러진다. 이는 재즈와 팝, 블루스 등 다양한 음악적 요소를 갖춘 이미영의 색깔을 드러내기에 적합한 방식의 소리 설계다. 또한 아티스트의 의도를 왜곡 없이 보여주기 위한 제작자의 역량이 드러나는 지점이기도 하다. 그로써 연주자의 오해 없는 진심이 우리에게 전해진다. 로라 레코드는 앨범마다 기준이 되는 소리를 새롭게 새긴다. 이는 정답지 하나만을 손에 쥐고 거기에 각기 다른 아티스트의 음악을 끼워 넣는 게 아니라 아티스트마다 새로운 답안지를 만드는 일에 가깝다. 이미영과 로라 레코드가 만나 완성된 이 마음을 하나씩 들여다보자.

경쾌한 드럼으로 시작하는 첫 트랙 'Anticipation'은 기분 좋은 기대감을 그린다. 잔향이 크지 않고 정확하게 귀에 안착하는 드러밍은 투명한 피아노와 만나 음악의 형상을 정확하게 그린다. 이미영은 이 곡을 들은 관객들에게 음악을 듣고 떠오른 것에 대해 물어봤다고 한다. 각기 다른 대답이었지만 결국 '무언가 멋진 일이 일어나기 직전의 기분 좋은 예감'이라는 점은 같았다고. 그런 기대는 이 곡에 자연스럽게 녹아든다. 앨범의 시작이 되기에 더 할 나위 없는 곡이다.

이어지는 'Silk & Soul'은 일상의 어느 지점에서 이 곡이 휴식이 되길 바라는 마음으로 만든 곡이다. 매끄럽게 이어지는 멜로디는 굳은 마음을 부드럽게 이완시키고 편안하게 만든다. 이미영의 음악은 거창한 곳에서 출발하지 않는다. 피부과 침대에 누워 흘러나오는 음악을 들으며 느낀 편안함처럼 이 음악도 쉬어갈 곳이 되길 바랄 뿐이다. 음악이 삶을 한 번도 경험하지 못한 곳으로 데려갈 필요는 없다. 모든 음악은 각자의 자리가 있는데, 그 자리가 거짓된 곳이 아닌 게 더 중요하다. 그런 의미에서 이미영의 음악은 삶의 자리를 꾸밈없이, 속임 없이 비춘다.

'Soft Focus'는 디즈니 애니메이션이 그리는 밝고 몽글몽글한 온기에 영감을 받은 곡이다. 이미영은 디즈니 음악으로 전국투어 공연을 하기도 했는데, 이는 그가 단순히 디즈니의 세계를 피상적으로 받아들여 인상을 풀어낸 게 아니라 나름의 방식으로 깊이 소화했음을 보여준다. 경쾌함을 잃지 않는 리듬과 멜로디는 디즈니 애니메이션 <백설 공주와 일곱 난쟁이>에서 비롯한 재즈 스탠더드 'Someday My Prince Will Come'에서 못다 한 이야기를 풀어내듯 따뜻하고 희망적이다.

'Bride Ashley'는 마법 같은 순간의 기록이다. 이미영의 음악을 들은 관객이 자신의 결혼식 신부 입장 곡 연주를 부탁한 것이다. 그의 말을 빌리면, 한 사람의 인생에서 가장 빛나는 순간의 배경음악이 된다는 것만큼 음악가에게 영광스러운 축복이 또 있을까. 나는 그 영광과 축복을 영영 알 수 없겠지만, 이 음악 덕분에 짐작해 볼 수는 있겠다. 이미영은 이 순간을 두고 “음악 하길 참 잘했다”리고 얘기했고, 나는 이렇게 돌려주고 싶다. 이 음악 듣기를 참 잘했다.

조카와 단둘이 보낸 하루를 떠올리는 'Sugar Rush Stomp'는 조카의 활력을 따라가기 다소(?) 어려운 고모의 모습이 그려지지만, 아무렴 좋다. 뒤뚱뒤뚱 잰걸음으로 조카를 쫓고 따르며 보낸 시간이 리듬과 멜로디에 고스란히 녹아있다. 활력 넘치는 다이내믹과 임송혁의 베이스 솔로는 곡이 가지고 있는 기억을 더욱 깊고 다채롭게 만들어 준다. 'Myong's Blues'는 이미영의 밝은 에너지가 고스란히 담긴 곡이다. 블루스라고 하면 보통 무게감 있고 진득한 그루브를 떠올릴 수 있지만 그의 블루스는 발랄하다. 이런 음악적 일관성은 연주자의 성격을 잘 보여준다. 속일 수 없는 명랑함이다.

마지막 곡 'The Calling Heart'는 말없이도 서로를 소환하는 마음에 대한 이야기다. 문새롭의 브러시가 안개처럼 흩뿌려지며 질감을 만들고 깊고 정확하게 울리는 베이스 위에서 이미영은 한층 차분하고 진중하다. 하지만 여전히 밝게 빛나는 마음을 놓지 않은 채로 건반을 누른다. 따뜻함과 활기, 경쾌함을 지나 천천히, 마지막으로 자신의 진심을 터놓는 연주자. 이미영의 음악은 끝에서 다시 시작된다.
