영화 <만추>에 담긴 숨결 같은 스코어

겨울이 온다. 가을은 가고 있다.
살인죄로 복역 중이던 중국계 미국인 여성
애나(탕웨이)가 7년 만에 나온 휴가는 하필 이때다.
그녀가 가야 하는 곳은 또 하필 비와 안개로 뒤덮인 도시
시애틀이다. 사실 애나는 휴가를 고대하지 않았다.
교도소 밖 세상에 대한 거부감은 그녀의 몸이 먼저 알고
있다. 오랜만에 꽂아본 귀걸이는 가려움을 남기고,
새 옷으로 갈아입자마자 걸려온 교도소의 전화는
그녀의 공상을 깨워버린다.
<만추>는 어느 여성 모범수의 휴가를 따라붙지만,
정작 그녀는 이 휴가를 즐길 여유가 없는 듯 보인다.
그녀의 시간이 다시 움직이기 시작했다.
이만희 감독의 <만추>와 이를 리메이크한 김태용
감독의 <만추>는 같은 계절을 배경으로 하지만,
서로 다른 심상의 계절을 담고 있다. (볼 수 없기 때문에
시나리오로 확인한) 이만희 감독의 <만추> 속에서의
가을은 아직은 많은 햇빛과 시원한 바람을 품고 있다.
그러나 김태용의 가을은 그저 축축하고 을씨년스럽다.
영화가 담고 있는 늦가을의 풍경은 곧 40년 전의
혜림(문정숙)과 40년 이후 애나(탕웨이)의 눈에 비친
세상일 것이다. 그들은 비슷한 상처를 겪었지만
각기 다른 치유의 방식을 선택했다.
혜림에게는 쪼그려 자는 낯선 남자에게 신문지를
덮어주는 여유와 그의 제안을 호기심으로 받아들일
만큼의 갈망이 있지만, 애나는 아예 모든 자극으로부터
감각을 차단한 채, 그저 죽어 있는 척 삭이고 있을
뿐이다.
혜림과 애나가 맞이한 휴가의 성격이 다르다는 것도
설명해야 할 것이다. 혜림의 휴가가 모범수로서 받은
상이었다면, 애나의 휴가는 원치 않았던 외출이다.
사실인 즉 애나는 자신의 시계를 멈추고 아무런 일도
일어나지 않는 채로 잘 살아왔다.
그러던 어느 날 엄마의 죽음이 애나의 휴가를 초래한다.
7년 만에 찾아온 동네에는 여전히 비가 내리고,
간만에 만난 가족의 호들갑은 낯설다.
다시 교도소로 돌아가야 할까 싶을 때, 한 남자가
나타난다.
언뜻 호스트바 종업원으로 보이는 그는 손님의
남편에게 쫓겨 도망치는 훈(현빈)이다.
애나에게 차비를 빌린 그는 그 대신 시계를 맡긴다.
훈의 시계가 애나의 손목에 걸쳐진 순간, 그녀의 시계가
다시 움직이기 시작한다.
“여자가 감옥에서 나온다. 한 남자를 만난다. 그리고
다시 돌아간다.” 원작이 가진 세 가지 명제를 놓고
시나리오를 쓴 김태용 감독은 로맨스에는 별 관심이
없는 듯 보인다. 그는 지독한 상처를 가진 한 여자가
자신의 상처를 모르는(게다가 알려고 하지도 않는!),
남자를 만나는 동안의 변화를 주의 깊게 관찰한다.
애나는 김태용 감독이 그려온 다른 여성과도 같은
상처를 지니고 있다. 단편 <달리는 차은>의 차은이와
<가족의 탄생>의 선경과 미라, 무신. <여고괴담 두번째
이야기>의 효신(박예진)까지.
그녀들의 연인들(오래된 연인. 동급생 남자 또는 여자.
혹은 아주 어린 남자이거나 남동생)은 하나같이
나약하고 비겁하다 못해 그녀들을 떠났다.
그리고 그들은 어떤 만남, 혹은 어떤 여행, 또는 어떤
대화를 통해 치유의 기적을 이뤄낸다. 국적과 언어가
다른 남녀가 이국의 공간에서 갖는 <만추>의 만남에는
기적에 대한 바람이 더욱 간절할 것이다.
애나와 훈은 여러 가지 놀이로 하루를 보낸다.
놀이를 제안하는 쪽은 물론 남자다.
훈은 부부를 가장해 애나의 이름을 알아내고, 그녀를
범퍼카에 태우고, 함께 달린다.
무표정한 애나의 얼굴은 그때마다 조금씩 다른 표정을
짓는다. 영화가 훈을 통해 애나에게서 끌어내려는 것이
그녀의 표정인 듯 보인다.
이야기의 처음부터 끝까지 애나에게는 여러 가지
충격요법이 처방된다. 집으로 가는 버스에서 잠시 눈을
붙이던 애나는 훈이 버스를 치는 소리에 눈을 뜬다.
자신을 무너뜨리려는 듯 훈과 섹스를 하려 했던 애나는
오히려 훈의 손길에 소스라친다.
폐관된 놀이공원을 배회하던 애나와 훈은 유령관광을
하겠다고 이곳을 찾은 사람들 때문에 더 크게 놀란다.
마음이 열리는 순간을 카메라에 담을 수 있다면...
만남의 기적은 그런 자극이 더해지고 더해진 뒤에야
일어난다. 범퍼카를 타던 애나와 훈은 또 다른
두 남녀의 모습을 연극처럼 바라본다.
훈은 그들의 입에 목소리를 덧입혀 헤어지려는 남자와
그를 다시 잡으려는 여자의 대화를 묘사한다.
훈이 “그건 사랑이 아니야. 추억이고 집착일 뿐이지”
라고 말한 뒤, 여자의 입에 다음 대사를 맞추려는
찰나에 애나가 끼어든다. “날 그런 눈으로 보지 말아요.
왜 그렇게 변한 건가요?” 남자에게 간청하는 애나의
목소리는 그녀의 사연을 담아 점점 격양되고, 애나는
급기야 눈물까지 연기한다. 이때 '무대'의 남자가 다시
여자에게 달려가 함께 춤을 춘다.
이 장면은 김태용 감독의 전작에서 엄마의 사랑을
뒤늦게 깨닫거나 새로운 가족의 탄생을 알릴 때
(<가족의 탄생>), 창피하기만 했던 엄마가 어느 날
절친한 친구가 됐을 때(<달리는 차은>) 등장했던
판타지와는 또 다른 양상이다.
언뜻 생뚱맞아 보이는 그들의 춤은 감독의 바람이
아니라 애나의 속마음이다.
애나는 갑자기 뛰기 시작하고, 달리기를 멈춘 뒤 그제야
자신의 사연을 털어놓는다.
영어로 시작한 이야기는 중국어로 변한다.
이때 중국어를 알아듣지 못하는 훈은 눈치껏
'하오'(좋다)와 '화이'(나쁘다)로 대답한다.
언어의 한계를 넘어서는 이들의 대화는 깊게 울린다.
구구절절한 설명과 뚜렷한 이해 없이도 소통이
가능하다는 감독의 믿음이자, <만추>의 이야기가
진정 바라고 있는 판타지일 것이다.
또한 해외 로케이션과 외국 배우가 드러내는 이국성을
글로벌 프로젝트의 전략으로만 소모시키지 않은
모범사례로 기록될 법한 장면이다.
<만추>는 단조로운 에피소드를 느린 호흡으로
이어가는 영화다. 하지만 눈을 뗄 수 없는 묘한
스펙터클을 전시하는 영화이기도 하다.
김태용 감독은 “누군가의 마음이 자신도 모르게
열리는 순간, 그 마음 자체를 카메라에 담아보고
싶었다”고 말했다.
이때 비와 안개에 젖은 시애틀의 풍경과 탕웨이의
쇠잔한 얼굴은 '마음'이란 개념의 실체를 그리는
캔버스로 기능한다.
애나가 나고 자란 곳이 시애틀인 줄 모르는 훈은
그녀에게 관광가이드를 자처한다. 무심코 훈을
따라나선 순간 애나의 눈에 비친 시애틀은 더 이상
자신에게 익숙한 동네가 아니다.
눅눅한 공기에 휩싸여 있던 이곳에 갑자기 오리 소리를
내라고 종용하는 우스꽝스러운 관광버스가 다니고,
그들이 찾아간 레스토랑에는 햇살이 비춘다.
시애틀이 비와 안개를 걷어내면서 그녀의 진짜 휴가,
진짜 여행이 시작되는 셈이다.
이때 훈이 제안한 놀이, 훈을 비롯한 주변 상황이
애나에게 가하는 자극에 따라 탕웨이의 얼굴은
'무표정'이란 카테고리 안에서 수많은 표정을 짓는다.
함께 하루를 보낸 두 남녀가 이제 서로의 길을 가야
할 때, 훈은 말한다. “웃어요. 난 당신이 웃는 얼굴이
좋아요.” 김태용 감독의 연출은 관객도 훈만큼
그녀의 얼굴에서 웃음이 드러나기를 간절히 바라게
만든다.
김태용 감독은 “대사의 전과 후, 사건의 전과 후 등
영화적으로 볼 때는 죽어 있는 시간에 핵심이 있는 것
같았다”고 말했다. 말하자면 <만추>는 관객이 원하고
기다리는 만큼 보이는 영화다.
애나는 분명 웃고, 놀라고, 멈칫하고, 슬퍼한다.
탕웨이의 얼굴은 죽어 있는 영화의 시간을 살리고 있다.
그녀가 미소 지은 순간
이만희의 <만추>가 두 남녀의 짧고 애절한
연애담이라면, 김태용의 <만추>는 한 여자가 버티는
하루를 그리는 영화다.
달리 말하면 애나의 감각이 다시 살아나기까지,
그래서 무표정한 그녀의 얼굴에 새로운 표정이
나타나기까지를 묘사한다.
그래서 단 하루라는 시간이 야속한 원작과 달리
애나와 훈의 만남에는 타이머가 돌아가지 않는다.
영화는 사랑일 수도, 아닐 수도 있는 어떤 감정을 나눈
두 남녀가 이제 어떻게 살아갈 것인지 조차 기대하지도
않는다.
애나의 얼굴을 집요하게 따라붙던 카메라가 드디어
그녀의 미소를 포착한 순간, 한 여자의 멈춰진 시간이
다시 흐르게 됐다는 확신만으로도 충만하기 때문이다.
이들이 보낸 하루의 추억은 짧아서 아쉬운 게 아니라,
그 자체로 주어진 선물이다.

살인죄로 복역 중이던 중국계 미국인 여성
애나(탕웨이)가 7년 만에 나온 휴가는 하필 이때다.
그녀가 가야 하는 곳은 또 하필 비와 안개로 뒤덮인 도시
시애틀이다. 사실 애나는 휴가를 고대하지 않았다.
교도소 밖 세상에 대한 거부감은 그녀의 몸이 먼저 알고
있다. 오랜만에 꽂아본 귀걸이는 가려움을 남기고,
새 옷으로 갈아입자마자 걸려온 교도소의 전화는
그녀의 공상을 깨워버린다.
<만추>는 어느 여성 모범수의 휴가를 따라붙지만,
정작 그녀는 이 휴가를 즐길 여유가 없는 듯 보인다.
그녀의 시간이 다시 움직이기 시작했다.
이만희 감독의 <만추>와 이를 리메이크한 김태용
감독의 <만추>는 같은 계절을 배경으로 하지만,

가을은 아직은 많은 햇빛과 시원한 바람을 품고 있다.
그러나 김태용의 가을은 그저 축축하고 을씨년스럽다.
영화가 담고 있는 늦가을의 풍경은 곧 40년 전의
혜림(문정숙)과 40년 이후 애나(탕웨이)의 눈에 비친
세상일 것이다. 그들은 비슷한 상처를 겪었지만
각기 다른 치유의 방식을 선택했다.
혜림에게는 쪼그려 자는 낯선 남자에게 신문지를
덮어주는 여유와 그의 제안을 호기심으로 받아들일
만큼의 갈망이 있지만, 애나는 아예 모든 자극으로부터
감각을 차단한 채, 그저 죽어 있는 척 삭이고 있을
뿐이다.
혜림과 애나가 맞이한 휴가의 성격이 다르다는 것도
설명해야 할 것이다. 혜림의 휴가가 모범수로서 받은
상이었다면, 애나의 휴가는 원치 않았던 외출이다.
사실인 즉 애나는 자신의 시계를 멈추고 아무런 일도
일어나지 않는 채로 잘 살아왔다.
그러던 어느 날 엄마의 죽음이 애나의 휴가를 초래한다.
7년 만에 찾아온 동네에는 여전히 비가 내리고,
간만에 만난 가족의 호들갑은 낯설다.
다시 교도소로 돌아가야 할까 싶을 때, 한 남자가
나타난다.
언뜻 호스트바 종업원으로 보이는 그는 손님의
남편에게 쫓겨 도망치는 훈(현빈)이다.
애나에게 차비를 빌린 그는 그 대신 시계를 맡긴다.
훈의 시계가 애나의 손목에 걸쳐진 순간, 그녀의 시계가
다시 움직이기 시작한다.
“여자가 감옥에서 나온다. 한 남자를 만난다. 그리고
다시 돌아간다.” 원작이 가진 세 가지 명제를 놓고
시나리오를 쓴 김태용 감독은 로맨스에는 별 관심이
없는 듯 보인다. 그는 지독한 상처를 가진 한 여자가
자신의 상처를 모르는(게다가 알려고 하지도 않는!),
남자를 만나는 동안의 변화를 주의 깊게 관찰한다.
애나는 김태용 감독이 그려온 다른 여성과도 같은
상처를 지니고 있다. 단편 <달리는 차은>의 차은이와
<가족의 탄생>의 선경과 미라, 무신. <여고괴담 두번째
이야기>의 효신(박예진)까지.
그녀들의 연인들(오래된 연인. 동급생 남자 또는 여자.
혹은 아주 어린 남자이거나 남동생)은 하나같이
나약하고 비겁하다 못해 그녀들을 떠났다.
그리고 그들은 어떤 만남, 혹은 어떤 여행, 또는 어떤
대화를 통해 치유의 기적을 이뤄낸다. 국적과 언어가
다른 남녀가 이국의 공간에서 갖는 <만추>의 만남에는
기적에 대한 바람이 더욱 간절할 것이다.
애나와 훈은 여러 가지 놀이로 하루를 보낸다.
놀이를 제안하는 쪽은 물론 남자다.
훈은 부부를 가장해 애나의 이름을 알아내고, 그녀를
범퍼카에 태우고, 함께 달린다.
무표정한 애나의 얼굴은 그때마다 조금씩 다른 표정을
짓는다. 영화가 훈을 통해 애나에게서 끌어내려는 것이
그녀의 표정인 듯 보인다.
이야기의 처음부터 끝까지 애나에게는 여러 가지
충격요법이 처방된다. 집으로 가는 버스에서 잠시 눈을
붙이던 애나는 훈이 버스를 치는 소리에 눈을 뜬다.
자신을 무너뜨리려는 듯 훈과 섹스를 하려 했던 애나는
오히려 훈의 손길에 소스라친다.
폐관된 놀이공원을 배회하던 애나와 훈은 유령관광을
하겠다고 이곳을 찾은 사람들 때문에 더 크게 놀란다.
마음이 열리는 순간을 카메라에 담을 수 있다면...
만남의 기적은 그런 자극이 더해지고 더해진 뒤에야
일어난다. 범퍼카를 타던 애나와 훈은 또 다른
두 남녀의 모습을 연극처럼 바라본다.
훈은 그들의 입에 목소리를 덧입혀 헤어지려는 남자와
그를 다시 잡으려는 여자의 대화를 묘사한다.
훈이 “그건 사랑이 아니야. 추억이고 집착일 뿐이지”
라고 말한 뒤, 여자의 입에 다음 대사를 맞추려는
찰나에 애나가 끼어든다. “날 그런 눈으로 보지 말아요.
왜 그렇게 변한 건가요?” 남자에게 간청하는 애나의
목소리는 그녀의 사연을 담아 점점 격양되고, 애나는
급기야 눈물까지 연기한다. 이때 '무대'의 남자가 다시
여자에게 달려가 함께 춤을 춘다.
이 장면은 김태용 감독의 전작에서 엄마의 사랑을
뒤늦게 깨닫거나 새로운 가족의 탄생을 알릴 때
(<가족의 탄생>), 창피하기만 했던 엄마가 어느 날
절친한 친구가 됐을 때(<달리는 차은>) 등장했던
판타지와는 또 다른 양상이다.
언뜻 생뚱맞아 보이는 그들의 춤은 감독의 바람이
아니라 애나의 속마음이다.
애나는 갑자기 뛰기 시작하고, 달리기를 멈춘 뒤 그제야
자신의 사연을 털어놓는다.
영어로 시작한 이야기는 중국어로 변한다.
이때 중국어를 알아듣지 못하는 훈은 눈치껏
'하오'(좋다)와 '화이'(나쁘다)로 대답한다.
언어의 한계를 넘어서는 이들의 대화는 깊게 울린다.
구구절절한 설명과 뚜렷한 이해 없이도 소통이
가능하다는 감독의 믿음이자, <만추>의 이야기가
진정 바라고 있는 판타지일 것이다.
또한 해외 로케이션과 외국 배우가 드러내는 이국성을
글로벌 프로젝트의 전략으로만 소모시키지 않은
모범사례로 기록될 법한 장면이다.
<만추>는 단조로운 에피소드를 느린 호흡으로
이어가는 영화다. 하지만 눈을 뗄 수 없는 묘한
스펙터클을 전시하는 영화이기도 하다.
김태용 감독은 “누군가의 마음이 자신도 모르게
열리는 순간, 그 마음 자체를 카메라에 담아보고
싶었다”고 말했다.
이때 비와 안개에 젖은 시애틀의 풍경과 탕웨이의
쇠잔한 얼굴은 '마음'이란 개념의 실체를 그리는
캔버스로 기능한다.
애나가 나고 자란 곳이 시애틀인 줄 모르는 훈은
그녀에게 관광가이드를 자처한다. 무심코 훈을
따라나선 순간 애나의 눈에 비친 시애틀은 더 이상
자신에게 익숙한 동네가 아니다.
눅눅한 공기에 휩싸여 있던 이곳에 갑자기 오리 소리를
내라고 종용하는 우스꽝스러운 관광버스가 다니고,
그들이 찾아간 레스토랑에는 햇살이 비춘다.
시애틀이 비와 안개를 걷어내면서 그녀의 진짜 휴가,
진짜 여행이 시작되는 셈이다.
이때 훈이 제안한 놀이, 훈을 비롯한 주변 상황이
애나에게 가하는 자극에 따라 탕웨이의 얼굴은
'무표정'이란 카테고리 안에서 수많은 표정을 짓는다.
함께 하루를 보낸 두 남녀가 이제 서로의 길을 가야
할 때, 훈은 말한다. “웃어요. 난 당신이 웃는 얼굴이
좋아요.” 김태용 감독의 연출은 관객도 훈만큼
그녀의 얼굴에서 웃음이 드러나기를 간절히 바라게
만든다.
김태용 감독은 “대사의 전과 후, 사건의 전과 후 등
영화적으로 볼 때는 죽어 있는 시간에 핵심이 있는 것
