Composers like Shin Jung-hyun, Park Chun-seok, and Gil Ok-yoon, who dominated their respective eras, commanded countless star singers. Among them, the "Shin Jung-hyun Division" is a representative expression that has become a descriptive term in Korean popular music. Countless singers were discovered by Shin Jung-hyun and rose to stardom. Among them, Kim Choo-ja and Kim Jung-mi are legendary female singers who represent this "Shin Jung-hyun Division." The albums of Kim Choo-ja, often remembered as the sexiest female singer in the history of Korean pop music, and Kim Jung-mi, recognized as having the sexiest vocal tone in the history of Korean pop music, have been reissued frequently since the 2000s, making them attractive collector's items.

Kim Chu-ja and Kim Jung-mi released albums with the same English title, "NOW," during their peak. While both albums are now considered rare Korean rock albums, they were banned at the time of their release, effectively blocking their access to the public. As their titles suggest, the two singers share many similarities. First, they seized the chance to act as stand-ins or stand-ins, seizing the opportunity to rise to stardom. Furthermore, their shared history in the Department of Theater and Film at Dongguk University is also intriguing.
Kim Chu-ja's "NOW," like Kim Jung-mi's "NOW," was banned, yet it has remained relatively untouched by any legitimate musical evaluation or reevaluation over the past half-century. Why? After Kim Chu-ja's activities were banned in 1975 during the so-called marijuana scandal, her limited production of a full-length album became a rarity, a rare find. Even I, a music collector for over half a century, have only seen a physical copy of Kim Chu-ja's "NOW" album twice, demonstrating its unique value. In fact, the majority of people have only been able to confirm the existence of Kim Chu-ja's "NOW" album through the relatively few, poorly produced, illegal copies of the album.
A session dominated by the Moog sound that was popular at the time
Both Kim Chu-ja and Kim Jung-mi's "NOW" albums were produced by Seong-eum, a label known for its exceptional sound quality among 1970s pop albums. Kim Jung-mi released her first album in 1973, numbered "SEL-100023," featuring a mix of new and established songs. Kim Chu-ja's "NOW," released on May 1, 1974, followed with the next number, "SEL-100024," containing the same ten songs as Kim Jung-mi. Unlike Kim Jung-mi's "NOW," which included a handful of newly released songs, Kim Chu-ja's "NOW" consisted of newly established songs that had only recently been released.
The album's opening A-side features three original compositions by composer Kim Hee-gap and two pop song adaptations. The inclusion of popular composers and contemporary pop song adaptations on Side A attests to Kim Chu-ja's growing stature as a popular singer. The interweaving of fast-paced, upbeat pieces with slow, emotional compositions, and the Moog sound sessions, driven by the then-fashionable electronic keyboard, represented a new style of arrangement that resonated with the contemporary public as sophisticated music.
The opening track, "Can It Be?" (그거 수 같은CAN 아) featuring an exciting rhythm created by drums and percussion instruments, was a huge hit that propelled Kim Chu-ja to fame. Released on December 28, 1973, this song was the title track of Kim Chu-ja's solo album, which gave all of its tracks English titles. Its familiar melody was later remade by Kim Se-hwan and Lee Ju-rang, and Kim Chu-ja often sang it as a staple in her concert repertoire. The following track, "Why Isn't He Coming?" (왜 안오올까), featuring Kim Chu-ja's captivating, lonely vocals, was also a hit from the same album, with the English title "Why Can't He Come?" Interestingly, the lyricists for both songs, Ha Nam-gung and Kim Jung-soon, were both famous singers in the 1960s and 1970s.
The following "Happy Sunday" is a cover of the 1972 British pop hit "Beautiful Sunday" by Daniel Boone, and was much loved for its lively atmosphere with the addition of the chorus and the sound of castanets. In fact, this pop song was also loved by many young people in Korea due to the addictiveness of the cheerful shuffle rhythm and repeated chord progression. Starting with Kim Chu-ja in 1973, many domestic singers, including the female duet Beauty Girls, Kim Hye-ja (vocalist of Wild Cat Lim Jong-im), Jeong Jae-eun, Kang Byeong-cheol, and Samtaegi, covered the song.
The longest cover on the album, "When This Night Goes," spanning over five minutes, is based on the instrumental piece "Samba Pati" by Mexican Latin rock guitarist Santana. Santana's powerful, heartbreaking guitar performance, as if he were sobbing, was truly captivating. Kim Chu-ja presented a novel approach by singing the original instrumental piece with lyrics written by Jeon Woo-joong. Following Kim Chu-ja's 1973 debut, Lee Seong-ae and Im Jong-im also covered the song with the same title and lyrics. "Dal-rae" was a daily drama of the same name that aired on TBC-TV in 1972, and its popularity was further fueled by Kim Chu-ja's poignant theme song. This success led to the 1974 film adaptation of the same name, starring Go Eun-ah.

B-side filled with Shin Jung-hyun's latest songs
The B-side is filled with Shin Jung-hyun's original compositions. Five songs, including "What Should I Do?" ("Private Soldier"), were selected from Kim Chu-ja's solo album, released on December 28, 1973, just prior to this album. Four of the songs are Kim Chu-ja's originals, while the final track, "Sunset," is a remake of Jang Hyun's 1972 hit. From the first track, "Regret," the title track of Kim Chu-ja's solo album, the upbeat and captivating rhythm and Kim Chu-ja's powerful vocals create a danceable atmosphere that captivates listeners. This hit solidified Kim Chu-ja's image as a dance singer. "Jolbyeong," with its intriguing march-like arrangement, contributed to the popularity of songs about soldiers, following her debut song, "Sergeant Kim Returns from Vietnam."
The lesser-known "What Should I Do?" features a lyrical melody characteristic of Shin Jung-hyun, making it feel familiar. Kim Chu-ja's versatile singing style, shifting between her true and falsetto in "Love Letter," showcases her mature presence as a vocalist. The closing track, "Sunset," offers the pleasure of comparing the versions of Jang Hyun and Kim Chu-ja, the two most popular male and female singers in Shin Jung-hyun's band. Kim Chu-ja's version, with its calm yet dramatic progression, is captivating, surpassing the original.

The album is being talked about for its cool jacket design.
The 1970s were a dark period, a time when the Yushin military regime controlled and oppressed the world. Kim Jung-mi and Kim Chu-ja's album "NOW" was released in 1973 and 1974, when the Yushin regime's control was at its peak. Just before the so-called marijuana scandal of 1975, when comprehensive social control was imposed under the guise of "Emergency Measure No. 9," both albums were unfortunately banned.
The blue and black jacket images of the two albums seemed like a harbinger of a bleak future. Kim Jung-mi's "NOW," reportedly photographed by Shin Jung-hyun himself, exudes a psychedelic ambiance, with its blue sky and red cosmos flowers. Conversely, Kim Chu-ja's "NOW" cover, with its dark and gloomy atmosphere, exudes a weighty atmosphere, reminiscent of the bleak society of the 1970s. Indeed, Kim Chu-ja's "NOW" album has become a favorite among collectors, renowned not for its tracks but for its striking dark jacket design, emblematic of the era.

The Marijuana Incident: The Beginning of Misfortune and Legend
The 1975 marijuana incident marked the beginning of misfortune for Kim Chu-ja and Kim Jung-mi, while also marking the beginning of a new legend. Kim Chu-ja, implicated in the incident, was banned from performing, and Kim Jung-mi, who had previously sung only Shin Jung-hyun's songs, was also banned from all her songs. In fact, Kim Jung-mi, mistakenly identified as a marijuana singer due to her membership in the Shin Jung-hyun Band, even underwent a police investigation. Just as Shin Jung-hyun's ban had brought him to his knees, all Shin Jung-hyun-related albums, including "NOW," were destroyed.
Kim Jung-mi's "NOW," which at the time was less popular and well-known than Kim Chu-ja, was re-evaluated as a masterpiece of Korean psychedelic music and has been re-released numerous times both domestically and internationally. In contrast, Kim Chu-ja's "NOW," a top-tier singer with no comparable popularity or recognition, received virtually no attention, making it ironic that it's only now being re-released for the first time. 매력적인 신중현사단의 대표 여가수 김추자와 김정미
한 시대를 풍미한 신중현, 박춘석, 길옥윤 같은 작곡가들은 '사단'급의 수많은 스타가수들을 거느렸었다. 그 중 '신중현 사단'은 한국대중음악에서 하나의 관형어구로 통하는 대표성을 지니고 있다. 신중현에게 발탁되어 스타덤에 올랐던 가수들은 무수하다. 그중 김추자와 김정미는 신중현사단을 대표하는 전설적인 여가수들이다. 대중가요 사상 최고의 섹시 여가수로 회자 되는 김추자와 대중가요 사상 가장 섹시한 음색의 여가수로 인정받는 김정미의 음반들은 2000년대 이후에 재발매 러쉬를 이루며 매력적인 수집 아이템으로 사랑받고 있다.

김추자와 김정미의 같은 영문 제목 앨범 'NOW'
김추자와 김정미는 전성기에 'NOW'라는 같은 영어 제목으로 앨범을 발표했었다. 지금은 두 앨범 모두 한국 록의 희귀앨범으로 분류되지만, 발매 당시엔 판매금지처분을 받아 대중과의 소통이 원천 봉쇄되었던 비운의 음반들이었다. 같은 제목처럼 두 가수는 공통점이 많다. 우선 우연하게 찾아온 대타 혹은 대역의 기회를 놓치지 않고 잡아 스타덤에 올랐고 동국대 연극영화과 선후배 사이라는 점도 흥미롭다.
김추자의 'NOW'는 김정미의 'NOW'처럼 금지 음반이지만 지난 반세기 동안 상대적으로 정당한 음악적인 평가나 재평가 작업이 일절 이뤄지지 않았다. 무슨 이유일까? 김추자의 'NOW' 음반은 상업성이 넘쳐나는 인기가수였기에 무수하게 제작된 그녀의 수많은 베스트 음반 중 하나로만 인식되었다. 음악적으로 재평가할 대상으로 여기지 않았던 측면이 있었다. 1975년 소위 대마초 파동으로 김추자가 활동 금지를 당하면서 소량 제작된 정규앨범은 실물 보기가 난망한 희귀앨범으로 둔갑했다. 반세기가 넘는 긴 세월동안 음악자료를 수집해 온 필자조차 김추자 'NOW'의 정규반 실물은 단 두 번만 보았으니 그 귀함은 말이 필요 없다. 사실 김추자 'NOW' 앨범은 그동안 대다수의 사람들이 상대적으로 개체수가 남아 있는 조악한 불법 빽판들을 통해서 존재 확인이 가능했다.
당시 유행했던 무그 사운드가 주도했던 세션
김추자와 김정미의 'NOW' 앨범들은 모두 70년대 대중가요 음반 중에서 탁월한 음질을 자랑하는 성음에서 제작했다. 김정미가 1973년에 음반번호 'SEL-100023'을 달고 총 10곡의 신곡과 기성곡을 혼합한 선곡 구성으로 발매했다. 뒤를 이어 1974년 5월 1일에 발매된 김추자의 'NOW'는 다음 번호인 'SEL-100024'을 달고 김정미와 같은 10곡을 담아 발표되었다. 소수의 처음 공개되는 신곡이 포함되었던 김정미의 'NOW'와는 달리 김추자의 'NOW'는 발표가 된지 얼마 되지 않은 기성곡들로 선곡되었다.
앨범의 문을 여는 A면은 작곡가 김희갑의 창작곡 3곡과 팝송 번안곡 2곡으로 구성되었다. 인기 작곡가와 동시대 대중에게 인기가 높았던 팝송 번안 곡을 A면에 배치한 것은 인기가수로 성장한 김추자의 위상을 증명한다. 빠르고 경쾌한 곡과 느릿하고 감성적인 곡을 교차 포진시키고 유행을 타기 시작했던 전자 키보드가 주도하는 무그 사운드 세션은 당대 대중이 세련된 음악으로 공감했던 새로운 스타일의 편곡이었다.
드럼과 타악기가 신나는 리듬을 구현하는 오프닝 곡 [그럴수가 있나요]는 김추자를 인기가수로 견인했던 빅히트곡이다. 이 곡은 모든 수록곡에 영어 제목을 붙여 1973년 12월 28일에 발표된 김추자 독집의 타이틀곡으로 'Can it be?'라는 영문 부제를 달았다. 멜로디가 익숙한 이 곡은 김세환과 이주랑이 리메이크했고 김추자도 공연에서 중요 레퍼토리로 자주 불렀다. 이어지는 김추자의 쓸쓸한 보컬이 매력적인 [왜 아니올까]도 같은 앨범에서 'Why can't he come?'이라는 영문 제목을 달았던 동반 히트곡이다. 흥미로운 점은 2곡의 작사가인 하남궁과 김중순은 60-70년대에 유명가수로 활동한 공통점이 있다.
이어지는 [즐거운 일요일]은 1972년 영국가수 다니엘 분(Daniel Boone)의 히트 팝송 [Beautiful Sunday]의 번안곡으로 코러스와 케스터네츠 소리가 더해지는 흥겨운 분위기로 많은 사랑을 받았다. 실제로 경쾌한 셔플 리듬과 반복되는 코드 진행이 안겨주는 중독성으로 인해 이 팝송은 한국 젊은이들로부터도 많은 사랑을 받았다. 이에 1973년 김추자를 시작으로 여성듀엣 뷰티걸스, 김혜자(들고양이의 보컬 임종임), 정재은, 강병철과 삼태기 등 많은 국내 가수들이 리메이크 했다.
앨범에서 가장 긴 5분이 넘는 번안곡 [이밤이 가면]은 멕시코의 라틴 록 기타리스트 산타나의 연주곡 [삼바 파티(samba pati)]가 원곡이다. 산타나가 들려준 흐느끼듯 강렬하게 청자의 가슴을 파고드는 기타 연주는 압권이었다. 김추자는 기존 연주곡을 전우중이 작사한 가사를 붙여 보컬 곡으로 노래하는 참신한 시도를 선보였다. 1973년에 처음 노래한 김추자 이후 이성애, 임종임도 같은 제목과 가사로 리메이크했다. [달래]는 1972년 TBC-TV에서 방영된 동명의 일일 연속극으로 김추자가 노래한 애절한 주제가로 인해 더욱 인기를 끌었다. 그 바람에 1974년 고은아가 주연배우로 등장한 동명의 영화까지 제작되었다.

신중현의 최신곡들로 채워진 B면
B면은 신중현의 창작곡들로 채워졌다. 수록곡들은 이 앨범 직전인 1973년 12월 28일에 발매된 김추자의 독집에 수록 된 10곡 중 [나라고 어찌하오] 등 5곡을 선곡해 구성했다. 4곡은 김추자가 오리지널이고 마지막 트랙 [석양]만 장현이 1972년에 히트시켰던 리메이크곡이다. 김추자 독집의 타이틀곡인 첫 곡 [후회]부터 경쾌하고 매력적인 리듬과 김추자의 파워풀한 보컬이 춤을 추며 청자의 귀를 신나게 잡아끈다. 김추자는 이 곡의 히트로 인해 댄스가수 이미지를 확실하게 각인시켰다. 행진곡풍의 편곡이 흥미로운 [졸병]은 데뷔곡 [월남에서 돌아온 김상사] 이후 군인을 소재로 했던 노래들의 유행에 일조했다.
잘 알려지지 않은 [나라고 어찌하오]는 신중현 특유의 서정미 넘치는 멜로디가 친숙하게 다가온다. [연애편지]에서 구사하는 김추자의 진성과 가성을 오가는 변화무쌍한 창법은 보컬리스트로서의 농익은 존재감을 들려준다. 엔딩곡 [석양]은 신중현사단의 최고 남녀 인기가수로 군림 했던 장현과 김추자 버전을 비교 감상하는 재미를 안겨준다. 차분하면서 드라마틱하게 전개되는 김추자 버전은 오리지널을 능가할 정도로 매력적이다.

재킷 디자인이 근사한 음반으로 회자
1970년대는 유신 군사정권이 세상을 통제하고 억압했던 암울했던 시기였다. 김정미와 김추자의 'NOW' 앨범은 유신군사정권의 통제가 극에 달했던 1973년과 1974년에 발표되었다. '긴급조치 9호'라는 미명 아래 전면적인 사회적 통제가 이뤄졌던 1975년 소위 대마초파동 직전에 두 앨범은 금지라는 슬픈 운명에서 벗어나질 못했다.
파란색과 검정색으로 장식된 두 앨범의 재킷 이미지는 마치 암울한 미래에 대한 전조 같았다. 신중현이 직접 촬영한 것으로 알려진 김정미의 'NOW'가 파란 하늘을 배경으로 빨간 코스모스와 어우러진 재킷에서 사이키델릭 진득한 향이 진동한다. 반면 어둡고 음습한 분위기가 매력적인 김추자의 'NOW'의 커버 이미지는 마치 70년대의 암울했던 사회를 대변하는 무거운 분위기가 오히려 매력적이다. 실제로 김추자의 'NOW' 음반은 수록곡들보다 시대를 상징하는 어두운 재킷 디자인이 근사한 음반으로 수집가들 사이에 회자 되었다.

불운과 전설의 시작인 대마초 사건
1975년 대마초 사건은 김추자와 김정미에게 불운의 시작인 동시에 새로운 전설의 서막이었다. 사건에 연루된 김추자는 활동 금지가 되어 사라졌고 신중현의 곡만 불렀던 김정미도 모든 노래에 금지 족쇄가 채워졌다. 실제로 신중현사단의 가수라는 이유로 대마초 가수로 오인 받았던 김정미는 경찰조사까지 받았다. 활동 금지로 침몰했던 신중현의 운명처럼 김추자와 김정미의 'NOW'를 비롯해 모든 신중현 관련 음반들은 폐기되었다.
당시 김추자에 비해 인기나 지명도가 떨어졌던 김정미의 'NOW'는 한국 사이키델릭의 명반으로 재평가되어 국내외에서 여러 차례 재발매되었다. 반면 인기와 인지도에서 비교 대상이 아니었던 정상급가수였던 김추자의 'NOW'는 상대적으로 전혀 조명을 전혀 받지 못해 이제야 첫 재발매가 이루어진 점은 아이러니하다. 전성기 신중현과 김추자의 최전성기 가창력이 담긴 이 앨범의 재발매는 늦었지만 암울했던 시절의 소중한 기록 복원이기에 반갑기 그지없다. /최규성 한국대중가요연구소 대표, 음악자료수집가
