Cosmic Chips [TASTE]

Listening to the new album by Cosmic Chips, the funk band led by Jung Yeop, the first thought that came to mind was the experience of magically sliding back into the past. It felt like being drawn into the 1970s, a time when American soul music went beyond love songs to convey faith and trust in humanity—ranging from human rights and peace to anti-war sentiments—along with rippling funk rhythms. Soul music of the 1970s was not simply born out of nowhere. Those sounds, which disarm the listener and cling to the ears, were the result of countless deliberations and social tempering. I am captivated by the music that makes me time-slip back to those desperately beautiful days.
To understand the 1970s soul music that Cosmic Chips takes listeners on, a bit of knowledge is required. American popular music was buzzing in the 1960s. This was because soul music, which originated on local indie labels and was similar yet distinct, shook up popular music not only in the United States but across the globe. Led by Detroit's Motown Records, the grooves of the traditional Atlantic, the Memphis rising powerhouses Stax and Hi, Muscle Shoals pouring out Alabama soul, and Philadelphia's Philly soul traversed the local and global, connecting with young people thirsty for novelty. During the same period, psychedelic and hard rock music, originating from electric blues, also exploded. Sharing roots in African American music, these genres stimulated one another, transcending the differences between Black and White, and between America and Europe. The spirit of the American Civil Rights Movement, the anti-Vietnam War movement, and the European 1968 revolution met with music, filling world popular music with an atmosphere of love and peace.
However, the 1970s, which began with the deaths of Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix and the virtual cessation of the Beatles' activities, saw a rapid shift away from the sentiment that had loudly criticized the world. American popular culture seemed to be quickly reverting to a white, male, mainstream sensibility. It was at this very moment that a musical hero was born who would cover the world's contradictions with love. Marvin Gaye’s *What's Going On* (1971), filled with a deeper soul, was released. The following year, Stevie Wonder also released *Talking Book*, marking a new phase for soul music. Expanded by Curtis Mayfield, Barry White, and Isaac Hayes, 1970s soul confronted a world of discrimination and greed with sexier rhythms and lyrics that blended faith in love with metaphors and similes. Falsetto left a smoother and stickier message, and the soul growl singing style transformed into something light yet deep. 1970s soul is remembered as a sound that shares roots with, yet is distinct from, disco, quiet storm, and pop-soul, which became the language of mainstream pop in the 1980s.
The reason I spoke at length about early 1970s soul is to emphasize that Cosmic Chips' new song is not merely a work that successfully imitates the playing of that era. Rather, it is to vividly demonstrate that they have learned from the multi-layered contemplations that their soul music predecessors struggled with and recreated them with their own unique sound. The first song serves as an intro. From the very beginning, it heads toward the distinctly overflowing soul of that era. Regarding this intro, Jung Yeop introduces it by saying, "I created it with a 70s-style radio opening in mind." With even a DJ commentary introducing Cosmic Chips, the objective was achieved. Furthermore, the atmosphere created by guitarist Yoo Ji-hoon taking charge of the keyboards even captures the Funkadelic sensibility that dreamed of the universe. It is also an atmosphere that evokes the band's name, Cosmic Chips. Through the existence of this song, listeners clearly sense what kind of music Cosmic Chips has returned with.
Using even a vibraphone, he perfectly captured the nuances of Marvin Gaye from the early 1970s. Is , along with <Raise the Volume> It maximizes this opened-up emotion. From Jung Yeop’s voice, which maximizes falsetto weaving between the vibraphone, percussion, and chorus, to Yoo Ji-hoon’s guitar, where rhythm cutting that highlights the spatial sense of the phaser shimmers, it penetrates the listener’s ears, leaving an unforgettable sweetness. The key lies in the sound composition, which reveals a deep understanding of the genre that cannot be easily imitated.
It even feels as though Marvin Gaye, who commanded with the sexiest voice in the world back then, is being reborn through Jung Yeop’s softly enveloping voice. "Raise the Volume," where guitar and string sampling sophisticatedly counterbalance the elasticity created by Jang Beom-yong’s bass and Son Deuk-il’s drums, also aligns with Marvin Gaye. Jung Yeop stated that he “wanted to evoke the Jacksons” with this song, and he successfully brings together the happy cohabitation of 1970s soul and the Jacksons through the staccato-emphasized chorus and drum performance. It explicitly summons the two heroes of Cosmic Chips, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. In particular, Jung Yeop’s ad-libs revealed throughout the film even evoke memories of his childhood, when he repeatedly practiced singing while imitating Stevie Wonder’s vocal style.
"Our Night," which rearranges doo-wop in a 1970s style, or the slow-tempo The guitar playing that runs through the album also deserves attention. The guitar, skillfully inserting rhythm cutting and short bends through the Fender Rhodes, tightly reinforces Jung Yeop’s voice as he drives the song, shifting between chest voice and falsetto. Two tracks where you can enjoy Cosmic Chips' musicianship and It is deeply regrettable that it does not continue longer. It is almost resentful that the harmony of guitar playing and percussion making active use of the wah pedal, the bass line leading and structuring the song behind the drums, and the keyboard adding flavor with comping, wraps up in just 1 minute and 30 seconds. Starting like a jam It is no exaggeration to say that the talkbox performance, which became widely known thanks to Stevie Wonder, unfolds in full force. The scene in the latter half where Jung Yeop's voice blends with the talkbox is short but breathtaking. I cannot shake the thought that I want to see Unique Note, with a tube in his mouth, and Jung Yeop playing this song while exchanging vocals on stage.
The short duration of the album leaves me feeling regretful throughout the listening experience. This also implies that it is a magnificent album, polished to the brim. Because there are no carelessly thrown-out notes, beats, or melodies, the more I listen, the stronger the desire grows to hear the Cosmic Chips members' ingrained playing habits, their instrument solos, and Jung Yeop's falsetto reach their climaxes. This is precisely why Cosmic Chips needs to hold live performances more frequently. Marvin Gaye was excellent on his albums, but don't we marvel even more at every live album that is unearthed and released posthumously? I want to see Cosmic Chips fully unleash the essence they have tantalizingly captured on stage. I want to immerse myself in the magical soul music they create for two hours at a time. To achieve this, this album must first reach a wider audience of music fans as soon as possible.

정엽이 이끄는 훵크(funk) 밴드 Cosmic Chips의 새 앨범을 들으며 가장 먼저 떠오른 생각은 마법처럼 과거로 미끄러져 가는 경험이었다. 미국의 소울 음악이 사랑 노래를 넘어 인권, 평화, 반전까지, 사람에 대한 믿음과 신뢰를 찰랑대는 훵크 리듬에 실어 나르던 1970년대로 빨려 들어가는 기분이랄까? 1970년대 소울은 그냥 태어난 음악이 아니었다. 듣는 사람을 무장해제시키며 귀에 감기는 그 소리들은 수많은 고민과 사회적 담금질을 통해 태어난 결과였다. 그 처절하게 아름다웠던 시절로 타임슬립을 하게 만드는 음악에 마음을 빼앗긴다.
Cosmic Chips가 청자를 데리고 떠나는 1970년대 소울 음악을 이해하려면 약간의 지식이 필요하다. 1960년대 미국 대중음악은 들썩였다. 지역 인디 레이블에서 시작한 서로 닮고 다른 소울 음악이 미국을 넘어 전 세계 대중음악을 뒤흔들었기 때문이다. 디트로이트의 모타운(Motown) 레코드사를 필두로, 전통의 애틀랜틱(Atlantic), 멤피스의 신흥 강자 스택스(Stax)와 하이(Hi), 앨라배마 소울을 쏟아내던 머슬 숄즈(Muscle Shoals), 필라델피아의 필리 소울(Philly soul)의 그루브는 로컬과 글로벌을 횡단하며 새로움에 목마르던 젊은이들과 접속했다. 같은 시기 일렉트릭 블루스에서 발원한 사이키델릭과 하드록 음악 또한 폭발했다. 아프리카계 미국 음악이라는 뿌리를 공유하는 이들 음악은 서로가 서로를 자극하며 흑백의 다름을, 아메리카와 유럽의 다름을 뛰어넘게 만들었다. 미국 민권운동과 베트남 전쟁 반전운동, 유럽 68혁명의 기운이 음악과 만나 세계 대중음악은 사랑과 평화의 기운으로 충만했다.

길게 1970년대 초반 소울 얘기를 한 까닭은 Cosmic Chips의 새 노래가 단순히 그 시절 연주를 잘 흉내 낸 작품이 아니라는 걸 강조하기 위해서다. 오히려 소울 뮤직 선배들이 빠졌던 다층적인 고민을 배우고, 자기 소리로 다시 만들어냈음을 입체적으로 드러내기 위함이다. 인트로 역할을 하는 첫 곡 부터 확연히 넘실대는 그 시절 소울로 향한다. 이 인트로를 두고 정엽은 “70년대 스타일의 라디오 오프닝을 염두에 두고 만들었다”고 소개한다. Cosmic Chips를 소개하는 DJ 멘트까지, 목적은 성공했다. 거기에 기타리스트 유지훈이 키보드까지 도맡아 자아낸 분위기는 우주를 꿈꾸던 펑카델릭(Funkadelic) 정서마저 담겨 있다. 밴드 Cosmic Chips의 이름이 연상되는 분위기이기도 하다. 이 곡의 존재로 청자들은 Cosmic Chips가 어떤 음악을 들고 돌아왔는지 확실히 감지하게 된다.
비브라폰까지 사용하며 1970년대 초반 마빈 게이의 뉘앙스를 제대로 구현한 는 , <볼륨을 높여>와 함께 이 열어젖힌 정서를 극대화한다. 비브라폰, 퍼커션, 코러스 사이를 파고드는 팔세토를 극대화한 정엽의 목소리, 페이저의 공간감을 살린 리듬 커팅이 찰랑대는 유지훈의 기타까지, 청자의 귀를 파고들며 잊기 어려운 감미로움을 남긴다. 핵심은 함부로 흉내 낼 수 없는 장르에 대한 깊은 이해가 드러나는 사운드 구성에 있다.
는 세상에서 가장 섹시한 목소리로 호령하던 시절의 마빈 게이가 부드럽게 감겨드는 정엽의 목소리로 다시 태어나는 느낌마저 든다. 장범용의 베이스와 손득일의 드럼이 만드는 탄력을 기타와 현악 샘플링이 세련되게 되치는 <볼륨을 높여> 역시 마빈 게이로 향한다. 정엽은 이 곡을 “잭슨스를 떠올리게 하고 싶었다”고 전하는데, 스타카토로 강조하는 코러스와 드럼 연주에서 1970년대 소울과 잭슨스의 행복한 동거를 성공시키고 있다. 는 노골적으로 Cosmic Chips의 두 영웅, 스티비 원더와 마빈 게이를 소환한다. 특히 곳곳에서 드러나는 정엽의 애드리브에서 스티비 원더의 창법을 따라 노래 연습을 반복하던 정엽의 어린 시절이 떠오르는 효과마저 나타난다.
두왑을 1970년대 스타일로 재구성한 <우리의 밤>이나 슬로 템포의 를 관통하는 기타 연주도 주목해야 한다. 펜더 로즈 사이로 파고드는 리듬 커팅과 짧은 벤딩을 맛깔나게 찔러 넣는 기타는 진성과 팔세토를 오가며 곡을 끌고 가는 정엽의 목소리를 쫀쫀하게 보강해 주기 때문이다. 앨범 전체에 넘실대는 짙은 코러스가 귀에 오래 남는 까닭은 단순히 멜로디만의 문제가 아니다. 정엽의 목소리를 더 맛깔나고 더 진하게 연출해주는 기타와 밴드의 존재 때문이다. 멤버 모두의 연주가 더해져야 완성되는 음악이랄까.
Cosmic Chips의 연주력을 즐길 수 있는 두 트랙 와 는 더 길게 이어지지 않는 것이 못내 안타깝다. 와와 페달을 적극 활용하는 기타 연주와 퍼커션, 드럼 뒤로 곡의 구조를 만들며 이끄는 베이스 라인과 컴핑으로 맛을 더하는 키보드의 조화가 1분 30초 만에 마무리된다는 사실이 원망스럽기까지 하니 말이다. 잼처럼 시작되는 은 스티비 원더 덕분에 널리 알려졌다고 해도 과언이 아닌 토크박스 연주가 한바탕 펼쳐지는데, 후반부 정엽의 목소리와 토크박스가 어우러지는 장면은 짧지만 압권이다. 무대에서 튜브를 입에 문 유니크노트와 정엽이 노래를 주고받으며 이 곡을 연주하는 장면을 보고 싶다는 생각이 떠나지 않는다.
앨범의 짧은 연주 시간이 듣는 내내 아쉽다. 군더더기 없이 다듬은 멋진 앨범이라는 얘기이기도 하다. 허투루 던지는 음이나 박자, 멜로디가 없기에 Cosmic Chips 멤버들의 손에 익은 연주 버릇이, 악기 솔로가, 정엽의 팔세토가 더 절정까지 치닫는 모습을 더 길게 듣고 싶다는 생각이 앨범을 들으면 들을수록 커진다. Cosmic Chips의 공연이 자주 열려야 하는 이유가 여기에 있다. 마빈 게이는 앨범도 훌륭했지만, 사후 하나씩 발굴되어 발매되는 라이브 앨범마다 더 감탄하게 되지 않던가. Cosmic Chips가 감질나게 담은 엑기스를 무대에서 훌훌 풀어내는 모습을 보고 싶다. 두 시간씩 Cosmic Chips가 만드는 마법 같은 소울 음악에 빠지고 싶다. 그러기 위해서는 우선 이 앨범이 더 빨리 음악 팬들과 널리 만나야 한다.
