Brown Eyed Soul, 5th full-length album [Soul Tricycle]

It's been exactly ten years since Brown Eyed Soul released their fourth full-length album, "Soul Cooke," in 2015. It's also been a full six years since the release of "It's Soul Right," the half-album to their fifth album. It's been a long time since an album was completed. We've always heard that releasing an album is incredibly difficult for musicians. Especially for those who have created their own music and been recognized for their musicality, the pressure is indescribable.

In September 2025, Brown Eyed Soul completed their fifth full-length album, [Soul Tricycle], adding the remaining half to the half they released in 2019. Where did the energy that allowed them to shake off the heavy burden and fill that half come from? The answer can be found in the album title, [Soul Tricycle]. "Tricycle" means three-wheeled bicycle. After running for over 20 years with a four-member lineup, they made a fresh start with a three-member lineup of Naul, Jungyeop, and Youngjun. While the name "tricycle" certainly conveys this meaning, its more significant meaning is "joy." It embodies the desire to make music with a pure heart, just like when they learned to ride a tricycle as children.

What do you think of the result of this first full-length album in 10 years, completed with such passion? The first impression after listening to the entire album is its diversity. While the broad framework of their music, "soul," remains unchanged, the 14 tracks, including six previously released tracks, encompass a diverse range of styles from various eras. It feels like a comprehensive compilation of over 50 years of Black music styles. Beyond the genre diversity, the album also features a rich and diverse collection of instruments and techniques long used in Black music. Of course, thanks to their years of experience and experimental spirit, the diverse styles and performances are top-notch. The members' personal visit to Japan for mastering also contributed to the album's perfection.

Let's take a look at the diverse tracks on the album. The title track, "Our Moment," has been chosen. It speaks of a time long gone, a time that can never be returned to. Memories of that pure and sparkling time, those moments, are recreated in a 1990s-inspired "contemporary pop R&B" style. It will resonate with those who identify with the music of that era and those who loved the music of Brasilia.

The album opens with "Soul Tricycle." The introduction's rain sounds and jazzy guitar sounds create a soulful atmosphere. This song, which announces the new identity of Boa Soul, features a 90s vibe created by the Roland TR-808, a sensual Moog bassline, and sophisticated harmonies.

The following track, "Maybe You Are Like This," takes us back to the '70s. The classic soul rhythm and brass section evoke memories of '70s soul, but the refined vocal harmonies and clean sound make it feel rather trendy.

"Love Scat" was performed with Jung Yeop's band, Cosmic Chips. This 60s Southern soul-style song showcases the bright, bubbly charm Jung Yeop displayed in Cosmic Chips, which can also be seen in Naul and Youngjun.

"City of Flowing Night" combines the 70s Philly soul style with Boa Sol's signature ballad style. Youngjun's steady vocals, combined with Naul and Jeongyeop's Philly-style falsetto, create a new sensation not found in traditional Philly soul.

"This Night We" is a mid-tempo contemporary R&B song that evokes nostalgia for the 90s. Its emotional, upbeat vibe will bring a warm smile to your face.

Youngjun's style stands out in "Every Day You." His signature style, blending soft R&B ballads with the romanticism of jazz, evokes the Quiet Storm that dominated the 1980s. His delicate and restrained sensibility, flowing melodies, and stable harmonies convey a sense of comfort.

The final track, "Familiar Story," was performed with Echo Bridge. The song's narrative, which gathers and then explodes pent-up emotions, is impressive. I applaud the veterans' ability to transform despair into passion in just four minutes.

This album is a high-quality one, crammed with 14 tracks, including 6 previously released tracks. Because they remain as strong as ever, you can savor the joy of listening to their music. The number "3" signifies perfection. I hope they continue to solidify their position, make music even more enjoyable than before, and gradually shorten the gap between album releases. 브라운 아이드 소울, 5th 정규 앨범 [Soul Tricycle]

브라운 아이드 소울이 정규 4집 [Soul Cooke]을 발매한 해가 2015년이니, 딱 10년이 지났다. 5집의 하프 앨범인 [It' Soul Right]이 공개된 지도 무려 6년. 한 장의 앨범이 완성되기까지 너무 긴 시간이 흘렀다. 뮤지션들이 앨범 한 장을 내는 건 상상 이상으로 힘든 일이라 늘 들어왔다. 특히나 직접 음악을 만들고 음악성으로 인정받아 왔다면 그 부담은 이루 말할 수 없을 것이다.

2025년 9월, 브라운 아이드 소울은 2019년 내놓았던 절반의 결과물에 나머지 절반을 더해 정규 5집 앨범 [Soul Tricycle]을 완성했다. 무거운 부담을 떨쳐내고 절반의 결과물을 채울 수 있었던 에너지는 어디에서 나왔을까? 그 답은 앨범 타이틀인 [Soul Tricycle]에서 찾을 수 있다. 'Tricycle', 세발자전거다. 4인 라인업으로 20여 년을 달려온 이들은 나얼, 정엽, 영준의 3인 라인업으로 새롭게 출발했다. 물론 세발자전거에 이 의미를 담았겠지만, 세발자전거에 담긴 더 중요한 의미는 '즐거움'이다. 세발자전거로 자전거를 배우던 어린 시절처럼 순수한 마음으로, 즐기면서 음악을 하겠다는 의미를 담았기 때문이다.

이들이 즐기는 마음으로 완성한 10년 만의 정규 앨범, 그 결과물은 어떨까? 앨범 전체를 들은 뒤의 첫 느낌은 다양함이다. 'soul'이라는 이들 음악의 큰 틀에는 변함이 없지만 6곡의 기발매 곡을 포함한 14곡에는 다양한 시대의 다양한 스타일이 고루 담겨있다. 50여 년의 흑인 음악 스타일이 총망라된 듯한 느낌이다. 장르적 다채로움 뿐 아니라 오랜 기간 흑인 음악에서 사용되었던 다양한 악기와 기법들 또한 다채롭고 풍성하게 담겼다. 물론 긴 세월 쌓아 온 이들의 내공과 실험정신 덕분에 다채롭게 채워진 스타일과 연주 모두 최상급이다. 멤버들이 직접 일본을 방문해 진행한 마스터링도 앨범의 완성도를 높이는데 기여했다.

다채로운 앨범 수록곡들의 면면을 살펴보자. 타이틀곡은 '우리들의 순간'이 낙점됐다. 이미 지나버린 돌아갈 수 없는 시절을 이야기한다. 순수하고 반짝이던 그 시절, 그 순간의 기억들을 1990년대 감성의 'contemporary pop R&B' 스타일로 풀어냈다. 그 시절의 음악에 공감하는 이들에게, 브아솔의 음악을 사랑했던 이들에게 변함없는 감동을 선사할 것이다.

앨범의 문을 여는 곡은 'Soul Tricycle'. 도입부의 빗소리와 재즈풍의 기타사운드가 감성 충만한 분위기를 만들어낸다. 새롭게 시작하는 브아솔의 정체성을 알리는 곡으로 'Roland TR-808' 사운드로 빚어낸 90년대 바이브, 감각적인 무그 베이스라인과 세련된 음색의 하모니가 돋보인다.

이어지는 '어쩌면 너는 이렇게도'는 70년대로 향한다. 전형적인 소울 리듬과 브라스 섹션이 70년대 소울의 추억을 안기지만, 세련된 보컬 하모니와 깔끔한 사운드 덕분에 오히려 트렌디하게 느껴진다.

'러브 스캣'은 정엽의 밴드 코스믹 칩스(Cosmic Chips)와 함께했다. 60년대 서던 소울 스타일의 곡으로 코스믹 칩스에서 보여준 정엽의 밝게 넘실거리는 매력을 나얼과 영준에게서도 접할 수 있다.

'흐르는 밤의 도시'는 70년대 필리 소울 스타일에 브아솔 특유의 발라드 스타일을 더했다. 영준의 안정된 보컬에 더해진 나얼, 정엽의 필리 스타일 팔세토가 정통 필리 소울에서 접할 수 없는 새로운 감동을 선사한다.

'이 밤 우리는'은 90년대 추억을 자극하는 미드 템포의 컨템포러리 R&B다. 감성을 가득 담은 흥겨움에 따뜻한 미소가 지어진다.

'매일 너를'에서는 영준의 스타일이 두드러진다. 부드러운 R&B 발라드에 재즈의 낭만을 더한 영준 특유의 스타일은 80년대 전후를 호령한 콰이어트 스톰을 소환한다. 여기에 섬세하고 절제된 감성, 유려한 멜로디와 안정적인 화음이 편안함을 전한다.

마지막에 자리한 '익숙한 얘기'는 에코브릿지와 함께했다. 아껴둔 감정을 모으고 폭발시키는 곡의 서사가 인상적이다. 4분 만에 허탈을 격정으로 바꿔내는 베테랑들의 능력에 박수를 보낸다.

6곡의 기발매 곡까지 14곡이 꽉꽉 채우고 있는 완성도 높은 앨범. 아직 이들이 여전하기에 앨범 음악을 접하는 즐거움을 만끽할 수 있다. 완전수를 의미한다는 '숫자 3'. 계속 그 자리에서 굳건하게 자리하길, 전보다 더 즐겁게 음악하며 앨범 발매의 간격을 조금씩이라도 줄여주길 기대해 본다. (대중음악평론가 이용지)
