A Kind Lecture by a Diligent Worker: "Ahn Hee-soo's Song Collection"

It hasn't been that long since sincerity began to be considered an artistic virtue. Especially in the arts, creators were perceived as more attractive the further they deviated from the world's established standards and frameworks. They were those who boldly engaged in actions that would be widely condemned, and readily uttered sharp words that others hesitated to speak. Often hailed as outliers and heretics, they were often criticized as well as celebrated. However, for those living today, like yesterday, and tomorrow, like today, they offered a sense of freshness, even liberation. The more deeply rooted this rebellious spirit became, the more authentic it was recognized.

Considering such long-standing conventions in the art world, singer-songwriter Ahn Hee-soo seems like someone who would always look sheepish at the mention of words like artist or authenticity. There was nothing special or innate about his musical career. He wasn't born with a gift for music, forced into it, or someone who, like a revelation from the heavens, crafted lyrics and melodies. However, one day in his late twenties, while living an ordinary life as an employee at a trading company, a colleague complimented his "good singing voice." That sudden impulse sparked a desire to pursue music. That's what shaped Ahn Hee-soo today. The idea that working as an indie singer requires original compositions, the practice of strumming guitar chords, composing melodies and lyrics, and arranging the sounds with various instruments to complete a song, were all part of his journey to "start making music."

This unique history, which seems to have shifted its chronological order, has actually become the driving force that solidified his music from the very roots. For him, music wasn't a cloud floating overhead, nor a sudden, brilliant light that struck him one day. Instead of starting with a feeling that it "could happen," Ahn Hee-soo, faced with a situation where it "had to happen," rationally identified the beads he could actually build, one by one, and strung them together. With an acoustic guitar, given to him cheaply by a friend, as his first instrument, Ahn Hee-soo, who only a few months ago would have never imagined becoming an indie singer, began to create songs one by one. This album, "Ahn Hee-soo Song Collection," is a collection of songs that he felt represented his growth.

Ahn Hee-soo's first song collection lives up to its title. It literally compiles all of his songs to date. Given that growth was the primary focus, it's perhaps natural that most of his recent work is featured. However, the track order is ambiguous. "Journey," the first new song included in the collection, opens the album, and the rest follows suit. It's not chronologically ordered, nor does it compile similar styles. "We Became Colorless" (2022) is followed by "Is That Strange?" (2024), followed by "Drawing" and "I'll Eat Up Your Darkness" (2023), before returning to 2022 with "Holding a Bouquet of Affectionate Starlight in My Arms."

While I tilt my head, wondering what criteria were used to select the songs, only when I clear my mind of the numbers does the album's intended landscape become clearer. "Ahn Hee-soo's Song Collection" is a record of the singer-songwriter Ahn Hee-soo's life. While the rings aren't evenly spaced, nor do they stand out from the trees that grew alongside them, each song clearly bears the marks of steady, sincere growth. Even if unsatisfactory, these are songs I bravely released into the world. Songs that gave me a sense of pride, thinking, "This is pretty good enough," and songs cherished by those who loved my music more than I did. Eight years into his career, amidst these songs that have finally found their own flavor, the minimal folk songs that embody the sincerity of his early, reckless beginnings with just an acoustic guitar suddenly emerge. With two full-length albums, three mini-albums, and numerous singles, the thick knuckles of someone who has quietly watched his growth, patiently honed his craft, are reliably evident.

The final song, "Grow Up," is a choice that makes me chuckle, seeming to instantly describe the musician Ahn Hee-soo and his collection of songs. Released once as a single in 2023 and again on the mini-album "Holding a Broken Compass," the song repeatedly promises to grow with you, with rest and happiness. Even amidst the tumultuous skies and inclement weather, the relentless, single-mindedness of his voice, seemingly unwavering, relentlessly stretches forward, reminding me of the branches of Ahn Hee-soo's songs, which will continue to grow as they have done so far. It's not growth for show. It's growth that he has chosen to pursue, a growth that needs no stopping, because it's improving. Even in Ahn Hee-soo's honest confession, describing this album as a "midterm checkup" for the next stage of his musical career, we sense that unwavering, burgeoning power. It's a sincere and affectionate foundation, much like the music he creates.

※ Poor playback
1) If you are using a turntable without a tonearm or weight adjustment function (mainly all-in-one models), you may experience a skipping phenomenon when playing tracks with large dynamic sound variations. This is mostly due to the light tonearm weight.
We do not accept returns or exchanges for playback problems caused by device issues, so we recommend playing on a device with adjustable tonearms.
2) Discs may not play smoothly due to static electricity and dust. This can usually be resolved by removing it with a dedicated product.
3) If dust accumulates on the needle, playback may not be smooth.

※ Disk abnormality
1) The disc surface may be warped or warped. Returns or exchanges are only possible if there is a problem with playback.
2) Disc center holes are sometimes manufactured with a small diameter to minimize distortion in the playback range and maintain maximum consistency during repeated playback. If they do not fit the turntable spindle, the center hole can be adjusted using a dedicated product.

성실한 작업자의 다정한 강단: 《안희수 노래 모음집》

성실이 예술가의 미덕으로 여겨지기 시작한 건 체감상 그리 오래되지 않은 일이다. 특히 예술 계통의 창작자는 세상이 정한 기준이나 틀에서 멀리 벗어나 있으면 있을수록 더 매력적으로 받아들여졌다. 여러모로 비난받을 행동을 거침없이 하고, 모두가 주저하는 날카로운 말을 쉽게 내뱉는 사람들. 세상의 돌연변이이자 이단아로 환호만큼이나 손가락질도 받기 일쑤였던 이들은 그러나 어제 같은 오늘과 오늘 같은 내일을 살아가는 이들에게 신선함, 나아가 해방감으로 다가갔다. 그런 반골 기질이 뿌리 깊으면 깊을수록 진정성도 인정받았다.

그런 예술계의 오랜 습속을 생각하면 싱어송라이터 안희수는 뭐랄까, 예술가나 진정성이라는 단어 앞에서 한결같이 머쓱한 표정만 지을 것 같은 인물이다. 그의 음악 인생에 특별하거나 타고난 건 아무것도 없었다. 태어날 때부터 남다른 재능에 어쩔 수 없이 음악의 길로 들어섰다거나, 먼 하늘 어딘가에서 계시처럼 들려온 소리로 가사와 멜로디를 길어 올린 사람이 아니라는 말이다. 다만 무역회사 직원으로 평범하게 살아가던 20대 후반의 어느 날 '노래하는 목소리가 좋다'는 동료의 칭찬에 문득 음악이 하고 싶어진, 그 갑작스러운 충동이 지금의 안희수를 만들었다. 인디 가수로서 활동하려면 자작곡이 있어야 한다는 것도, 기타로 코드를 짚고, 거기에 멜로디와 가사를 얹고, 이런저런 악기로 소리를 꾸며 곡을 완성한다는 것도 '음악을 시작해야겠다'는 생각 뒤에 따라온 공부였다.

선후관계가 어딘가 한참 바뀐 듯한 독특한 이력은 오히려 그의 음악을 뿌리부터 단단하게 만든 원동력이 되었다. 그에게 음악은 머리 위에 뭉게뭉게 떠오른 구름도, 어느 날 갑자기 들이닥친 찬란한 빛도 아니었다. '될 것 같은' 기분으로 시작한 게 아니라 '되어야 하는' 상황에 놓인 안희수는 이성적인 판단하에 지금 눈앞에 자신이 실제로 쌓을 수 있는 구슬을 하나씩 찾아 차곡차곡 꿰어 나갔다. 친구에게 싼값에 건네받은 통기타를 최초의 악기로, 불과 몇 달 전만 해도 인디 가수가 될 거라고는 생각도 하지 못했던 안희수의 노래가 하나씩 탄생했다. 그 가운데 스스로 '이 정도면 성장했다'고 느낀 곡들을 모은 게 바로 이 앨범 《안희수 노래 모음집》이다.

안희수의 첫 노래 모음집은 제목에 충실하다. 말 그대로 그가 지금까지 발표한 노래를 한 장에 모았다. 성장이 첫 기준이었으니 최근 곡이 대부분인 건 어쩌면 당연하다. 반면 선곡 순서는 모호하다. 노래 모음집에 처음 수록되는 신곡 '여정'이 문을 연 뒤, 이후는 제멋대로다. 발표한 시간순으로 나열한 것도 아니고, 비슷한 스타일을 모은 것도 아니다. 2022년 곡 '무채색이 돼버린 우리는' 다음으로 2024년 발표한 '그게 이상한가요?'가 붙고, 2023년 발표한 'Drawing'과 '네 어둠은 내가 먹어치울게'가 쭉 이어지다가는 '다정한 별빛 한 다발 품에 안고'로 다시 2022년으로 돌아가는 식이다.

어떤 기준으로 선곡한 걸까 고개가 갸웃해지는 사이 머릿속에서 숫자를 비우면 비로소 앨범이 그리고자 한 풍경이 선명해진다. 《안희수 노래 모음집》은 안희수라는 한 싱어송라이터가 거쳐온 시간이 그대로 기록된 나이테다. 나이테의 간격이 일정하지도, 함께 자란 나무들 사이 월등히 큰 덩치도 아니지만 한 줄씩 꾸준히, 정말이지 성실하게 성장한 자국이 곡마다 선명하다. 만족스럽지 않더라도 용기 내 세상에 내보낸 곡들, 이 정도면 썩 괜찮지 않나 조금 뿌듯했던 곡들, 나보다 더 나의 노래를 좋아한 사람들이 아껴준 곡들. 활동 8년 차, 이제는 어느 정도 자기 맛을 내게 된 노래들 사이로 통기타 하나로 무모하게 음악을 시작했던 초창기의 진심을 담은 미니멀한 포크 곡들이 문득 얼굴을 내민다. 두 장의 정규 앨범과 세 장의 미니 앨범, 이외에도 다수의 싱글까지 짧지 않은 시간 동안 묵묵히 자신의 성장을 지켜보고. 인내하고, 다듬어 온 사람의 굵은 손가락 마디가 믿음직하다.

마지막 곡이 '자라날게'라는 건 그런 성정을 가진 안희수라는 음악가와 그의 노래 모음집을 단번에 설명해 주는 것 같아 괜스레 웃음이 나는 선택이다. 2023년 싱글로 한 번, 미니 앨범 《망가진 나침반을 들고》에서 한 번 더 대중에 선을 보인 노래는 당신 곁에서 쉼으로, 행복으로 자라나겠다며 반복해 다짐한다. 무너진 하늘과 궂은 날씨 속에서도 꿈쩍 없이 반복될 것만 같은, 오로지 한 방향만을 향해 지독하게 뻗어나가는 목소리에서 지금까지처럼 앞으로도 꾸준히 뻗어나갈 안희수가 만들 노래의 가지들을 떠올린다. 누군가에게 보이기 위해 자라는 게 아니다. 그가 그렇게 정했기 때문에, 전보다 나아지고 있기에 멈출 필요 없는 자라남이다. 이 앨범을 자신의 음악 인생에 있어 다음 단계로 가기 위한 자체적인 '중간 점검'이라고 말하는 안희수의 솔직한 고백에서마저도 그 흔들림 없는 무럭무럭의 힘이 느껴진다. 자신이 만든 음악을 꼭 닮은, 성실하고 다정한 강단이다.
