항상 고개를 올려다보면 한 아이가 있었다.
유일하게 나를 사랑스럽게 봐주던 아이.

어른들은 나를 보면 작은 통으로 던지고 구석에 쑤셔 넣기 바빴지만 이 아이와 함께라면 나는 영웅이 되기도 하고 친구가 되어 그날 하루의 이야기를 들어주기도 했다.

아이가 눈물을 흘릴 때면 함께 눈물을 흘리지 못하는 것이 너무나도 슬펐고
아이가 나를 높이 들어 주던 때에는 에베레스트라도 올라간 것처럼 멋진 장관에 말을 잃곤 했었다.

나는 이 아이와 영원히 함께할 것이라고 믿었고,
언제나 함께 이 세계를 여행하며 다닐 것이라는 꿈을 꾸기 시작했다.

하지만 시간이 흐르고 아이가 바라보는 것은 내가 아니게 되었다.
학교에서 데리고 온 친구와 노는 동안 나는 구석에서 조금씩 녹슬어가고 있었다.

하지만 나는 언제나 기대하고 있었다.
아이는 다시 나를 찾아와 줄 것이라고

어느 날 아이의 어머니가 찾아오고 곧 세상이 어두워지는 걸 느꼈다
이곳이 어디지? 하며 둘러봐도 사방은 어둠뿐이었다.
그 순간 예전에 아이가 들려줬던 이야기가 생각났다.

"우주는 아주 검고 아무것도 없대."
"그리고 엄청 넓어서 여행하려면 끝없이 가야 한대. 정말 대단하지?"
"나도 꼭 나중에 커서 우주로 가고 싶어. 너도 같이 가자~"

그렇다. 이곳은 우주였던 것이다.

무언가 내가 진짜로 우주에 왔다는 것에 약간 신이 났다
정말 어디가 끝인지 모를 정도로 정말 어둠이 끝없이 펼쳐져 있었고
나의 세상보다 훨씬 넓은 세상에 왔다는 것에 놀라움을 멈출 수 없었다.

하지만 곧 아이와의 약속이 마음에 걸렸다.
우리는 언젠가 함께 우주에 가기로 했던 그 약속.
아무리 넓은 세상을 만나도 그 아이와 함께 하는 게 아니라면 그저 고독한 세계일 뿐이었다.

녹슨 어깨를 들고 손을 흔들며 나 여기 있다고 소리쳐봤지만 들려오는 대답은 더 이상 없었다. 내가 할 수 있는 건 언제나처럼 기다리는 것뿐이었다.
아이는 언젠가 다가와 하루에 대한 얘기를 또 들려주리라 그렇게 믿었다.
내가 가장 좋아하고 사랑하는 아이를 기다리는 것은 그렇게 어렵지 않다.

나는 항상 너만 생각하고 기다려왔으니까.
