If you want to know the spirit and attitude of today's young Koreans, I recommend listening to Hyukoh's music.
This band, made up of four young people of the same age born in 1993, unleashes the 'loser' sentiment unique to young Koreans today through the rock library they have accumulated. In their album, the defeat of youth, which is difficult to achieve brilliant success like their parents' generation due to low growth, is contained through the depiction of daily life with a dark atmosphere.
While twisting exciting music such as rock 'n' roll, country, and twist in a new way, it depicts youth living as if they are being chased, and conveys the wandering of youth who are lost in direction and wandering aimlessly through clear visual images, just like a movie OST. So Hyukoh's album reinterprets existing rock while talking about the very present moment in Korea. This is why they became an icon to young people as soon as they debuted, and soon after that, they became a representative rock band in Korea. 1993년생 동갑내기 네 명의 젊은이들이 모인 이 밴드는 지금 한국 젊은이들 특유의 ‘루저’ 정서를 그들이 쌓아놓은 록의 라이브러리를 통해 풀어놓는다. 그들의 앨범에는 저성장으로 인해 부모 세대처럼 빛나는 성공을 하기 어려운 청춘의 패배가 어두운 공기가 감도는 일상에 대한 묘사를 통해 담긴다.
로큰롤, 컨트리, 트위스트 등 흥겨운 음악들을 새로운 방식으로 뒤틀면서 무엇에 쫓기듯 살아가는 청춘의 모습을 그리기도 하고, 방향을 잃은 채 정처 없이 헤매는 청춘의 방황을 마치 영화 OST처럼 선명한 시각적 이미지로 전달한다. 그래서 혁오의 앨범은 한국에서 가장 바로 지금 이 순간에 대해 이야기하면서, 기존의 록을 새롭게 해석한다. 그들이 데뷔하자마자 젊은이들에게 아이콘이 되고, 그로부터 얼마 후 한국의 대표적인 록 밴드로 자리잡게 된 이유다. K-POP이 한국의 판타지라면, 록밴드 혁오의 음악에는 한국 청춘들의 현재가 있다.
