Why do people listen to music The reasons are as diverse as the number of people who listen to music. Some people need music to enjoy the overwhelming happiness more deeply, while others seek comforting songs to soothe their sorrow. Some people are desperate for a work song that will cheer them up on a tiring morning when they go to work with a body that doesn’t feel like their heart. I'm sure there will be people who will respond with a cold heart, saying that they love music so much that they listen hard to find their taste, or that they just listen because they hear it. The important thing is that all those people 'listen' to the music no matter what.

Taejin Son is a singer. Since he majored in vocal music and became known to the public through a survival program centered on crossover music, it is not too awkward to be called a vocalist and crossover musician. However, among the words that describe him, one absolute formula that no one will be wrong is the fact that he is a 'singer'. It is the same when looking back on the not short time that Son Tae-jin has expressed himself through song. His voice, which boasts a heavy resonance with a bass baritone, was good in 'Stars' of the musical 'Les Misérables', but at the same time, it suited Kim Dong-ryul's 'Old Song' very well. The 'Old Song', which he picked as the 'song that changed his life', was a song that properly taught him that it was possible to express songs without difficulty even with vocal music.

'Old Song' crossed a longer time and became the first button and the biggest support for this album [THE PRESENT Part 1- At The Time]. Having been active as a member of the vocal group Forte di Quattro, he has some unexpected names in his first album with the three letters 'Son Tae-jin'. Pianist Kim Kwang-min was named as the composer and performer of the emotional first song that opens the album's door, 'To the End of this World'. 'Moonlight in Tongyeong', which begins with careful flirtation in case a deep sleep will wake up, introduces the name of singer-songwriter and composer Lee Kyu-ho, who is famous for his unique pure and romantic sensibility. The duet song 'Getting Deeper' with Red Velvet's main vocalist Wendy, which was released as a pre-release song and raised expectations for the album, contains two songs, a solo version that can only be heard by Son Tae-jin's voice and a duet version.

One thought comes to mind while listening to songs that are as warm and cozy as expected. Part 2, which will be released as a series, will already be warm and cozy without having to publicize the splendid aspects of those who announced their participation. Because it is Son Tae-jin's voice that sings that song. At times like this, I suddenly think of the emotions that people who have heard his songs have felt. Music that permeates like the winter sunlight that gets longer as the season deepens, like the moist spring rain that falls calmly and silently. Genres and fields of activity are just the pastimes of luxury lovers who love horses. The moment you hear it, there is music that is called by a voice that embraces your whole body. That music will go to the side of those who are listening to it today for their own reasons and become their own warmth and strength. Is it worth more music than this?

사람들은 왜 음악을 듣는가. 음악을 듣는 사람의 숫자만큼 이유도 다채로울 것이다. 누군가는 가슴 벅찬 행복을 더 깊이 즐기기 위해 음악이 필요하고, 누군가는 시리게 스며드는 슬픔을 달래기 위한 위로의 노래를 찾는다. 마음 같지 않은 몸을 이끌고 출근하는 피곤한 아침을 힘차게 열어줄 노동요 한 곡이 간절한 사람도 있고, 모두가 잠든 새벽, 너는 혼자가 아니라고 말해 줄 친구 같은 음악을 찾는 사람도 있을 것이다. 음악을 워낙 좋아해서 취향을 찾아 열심히 듣는다거나 그냥 들리니까 들을 뿐이라고 시큰둥하게 대답하는 사람도 분명 있을 테다. 중요한 건, 그 사람들이 모두 어찌 되었든 음악을 '듣는다'는 점이다.

손태진은 노래하는 사람이다. 성악을 전공했고, 크로스오버 음악을 중심으로 한 서바이벌 프로그램을 통해 대중에 알려졌으니 사회 통념상 성악가이자 크로스오버 뮤지션으로 불리는 것이 크게 어색하지 않다. 하지만 그를 설명하는 말 가운데 누구도 틀리지 않을 절대적인 수식 하나는, 그가 '노래하는 사람'이라는 사실이다. 손태진이 노래로 자신을 표현해온 짧지 않은 시간을 되짚어봐도 그렇다. 베이스 바리톤으로 묵직한 울림을 자랑하는 그의 목소리는 뮤지컬 '레 미제라블'의 'Stars'에서도 좋았지만, 동시에 김동률의 '오래된 노래'에도 썩 잘 어울렸다. 스스로 자신의 '인생을 바꿔준 노래'로 꼽기도 한 '오래된 노래'는 그에게 성악으로도 가요를 어렵지 않게 표현할 수 있다는 걸 제대로 알려준 곡이었다.

'오래된 노래'는 더 오랜 시간을 건너 이 앨범 [THE PRESENT Part 1- At The Time]의 첫 단추이자 가장 큰 지원군이 되었다. 그동안 보컬 그룹 포르테 디 콰트로의 멤버로 활동해 온 그가 '손태진'이라는 이름 세 글자를 달고 처음 발표하는 앨범에는 다소 의외의 이름들이 함께한다. 앨범의 문을 여는 감성 어린 첫 곡 '이 세상 끝까지'의 작곡과 연주에는 피아니스트 김광민이 이름을 올렸다. 깊이 잠든 밤이 깨어날까 조심스레 새살대며 시작되는 '통영의 달밤'은 특유의 순수하고 낭만적인 감성으로 유명한 싱어송라이터이자 작곡가 이규호의 이름을 만날 수 있다. 선공개 곡으로 먼저 발표되어 앨범에 대한 기대를 높였던 레드벨벳의 메인 보컬 웬디와의 듀엣곡 '깊어지네'는 손태진의 목소리로만 들을 수 있는 솔로 버전과 듀엣으로 부른 버전 두 곡을 동시에 수록했다.

예상만큼 따뜻하고 포근하게 귓가를 맴도는 노래들을 들으며 드는 생각은 하나다. 연작으로 공개될 Part 2 역시, 참여를 예고한 이들의 화려한 면모를 굳이 알리지 않아도 이미 따뜻하고, 포근할 것이다. 그 노래를 부르는 것이 손태진의 목소리이기 때문이다. 이럴 때면 문득 지금까지 그의 노래를 들어온 사람들이 느껴왔을 감정을 새삼 떠올려 보게 된다. 계절이 깊어지며 조금씩 길어지는 겨울 햇살처럼, 소리 없이 차분히 내리는 촉촉한 봄비처럼 스며드는 음악. 장르나 활동 분야 같은 건 말 좋아하는 호사가들의 소일거리일 뿐이다. 듣는 순간 온몸을 감싸 안는 목소리가 부르는 음악이 있다. 그 음악은 오늘도 각자의 이유로 음악을 듣고 있는 사람들의 곁에 찾아가 각자의 온기와 힘이 될 것이다. 이보다 큰 음악의 가치가 있을까.
