- The 4th regular album of “Summer of Thought” [Hand]

Songwriter Park Jong-hyun, who has been walking slowly, starting with his first album 《Summer of Thoughts》 (2009), as well as 《The Cape》 (2012), 《Back into the Forest》 (2016), and 《The Republic of Trees》 (2019). The project “Summer of Thought” presents its 4th regular album 《Hand》.
The title "hand" is both the hand of the 'worker' and the hand of the 'guest', and is a word that shows the character of this album. In all the songs in this work, which claims to be a collaborative album, Park Jong-hyun intentionally leaves one of the key points of the work he has done himself, such as composition, arrangement, and singing, in the hands of other musicians. This attempt, which began in search of expressions that deviated from the writing method accustomed to adapting to one's own voice and character for over a decade, was completed with the willing hands of eight fellow musicians.
Eight musicians, including 9 (Song Jae-kyung), Kwon Wol, Kim Sa-wol, Kang Ah-sol, Kim Il-du, Park Hye-ri, Lee Seung-jun, and Hong Gap, participate in singing, composing, or arranging each track on the album. As singer-songwriters who shine with their own colors, they and Park Jong-hyun create new songs by mixing or putting each other's colors together like paint. The writing he wrote meets and collides with the breath of other musicians, and his breath struggles with the melody and atmosphere created by other musicians. The eight songs, completed in the intended tension, are tied together as narratives in the album, but on the other hand, they are revealed in a variety of colors that vary depending on the collaborators.
As if thinking about directing and stage setting according to the script, each song is composed of different genres and different instruments because the music was designed according to the lyrics and the voice that sings it. To this end, performers such as Min Sang-yong, Yang Hyeon-mo (drums), Lee Dong-jun (bass), Park Hye-ri (accordion), Hong-gap and Jang Hyeon-ho (guitar), Lim I-hwan (cello), and Kwon Wol (piano) come and go to help complete the song. The color difference between the tracks is more prominent due to mixing (Min Sang-yong) with different orientation and emphasis for each song. Kijo Kim (cover design), Inhee Byun (logo design), and Resop (directing and painting video) create visual images that harmonize with music.
In a play called “Summer of Thoughts,” which was close to a monodrama, several characters appeared on one page. However, the listener just needs to follow the story of each song and its voice, and feel the “hands” that are formed by intertwining them. It's just a matter of meeting the unfamiliar song every moment like a hand.

- “생각의 여름”의 네 번째 정규 음반 [손]

첫 음반 《생각의 여름》 (2009)을 시작으로 《곶》 (2012), 《다시 숲 속으로》 (2016), 《The Republic of Trees》 (2019) 등을 발표하며 느릿느릿 걸어온 송라이터 박종현의 프로젝트 “생각의 여름”이 정규 4집 《손》을 선보인다.
표제 《손》은 '일손'의 손이기도 하고 '손님'의 손이기도 하며, 이번 음반의 성격을 보여주는 단어이다. 협업 음반을 표방한 이번 작업의 모든 곡에서 박종현은 작곡, 편곡, 가창 등 그간 모두 스스로 해온 작업의 핵심 중 하나씩을 의도적으로 다른 음악가들의 손에 맡긴다. 십 년 넘게 스스로의 목소리와 그 캐릭터에 맞추어내는 데 익숙해진 작법으로부터 벗어난 표현들을 찾고자 시작된 이러한 시도는, 여덟 명의 동료 음악가들이 기꺼이 내어준 손을 잡음으로써 완성된다.
음반의 각 트랙에는 9(송재경), 권월, 김사월, 강아솔, 김일두, 박혜리, 이승준, 홍갑 등 여덟 명의 음악가들이 노래, 작곡, 혹은 편곡으로 참여하고 있다. 각자의 색깔로 빛나는 싱어송라이터인 이들과 박종현은 서로의 색을 물감처럼 섞어보거나 곁에 두어보면서 새로운 곡을 만들어간다. 그가 적은 글이 다른 음악가의 호흡과 만나 부딪고, 다른 음악가가 빚어낸 선율과 분위기에 그의 호흡이 애쓴다. 의도된 긴장 속에서 완성된 여덟 곡은 앨범 안에서 한데 서사로 묶이지만, 한편으로 협업자에 따라 달라지는 다채로운 빛깔로 드러난다.
대본에 맞추어 연출과 무대장치를 고민하듯, 가사에 그리고 그것을 부르는 목소리에 맞추어 추후 음악을 설계하였기에 각 곡들은 각기 다른 장르, 다른 악기 편성으로 이루어진다. 이를 위해 민상용과 양현모(드럼), 이동준(베이스), 박혜리(아코디언), 홍갑과 장현호(기타), 임이환(첼로), 권월(피아노) 등의 연주자들이 드나들며 곡의 완성을 돕는다. 트랙 간의 빛깔차는 곡별로 다른 지향과 주안점을 둔 믹싱(민상용)에 의해 더 두드러진다. 김기조(커버 디자인)와 변인희(로고 디자인), 리솝(영상 연출 및 그림)가 음악과 어우러질 시각 이미지를 빚는다.
모노드라마에 가까웠던 “생각의 여름”이란 연극의 한 장에 등장 인물들이 여럿 올라오는 셈이다. 하지만 청자는 그저 각 곡의 이야기와 그 목소리를 따라가다가, 그것들이 서로 엮여 이루는 한 덩이의 《손》을 감각하면 될 일이다. 손처럼 건네오는 노래를 순간순간 낯설게 맞잡으면 될 일이다.
