Prequel to 'Series Lucy' drawn with three songs

It left an aftertaste as if you were watching a fast-paced movie. To the extent that it was bizarre that it took about 10 minutes to complete, there are countless stories contained in the remaining afterimages.

In the lyrics of 'Fireplace', the speaker's time before now is drawn. A piece of youth that is very lonely and lost. The narrator, who got a sip of courage from someone, looks at the bonfire and slowly focuses on the positive situation given to him. Sometimes, just as a short introspection rather than a long period of learning makes us grow up, so did the speaker. At the end of the song, the small bonfire seemed to be all the warmth of the world, but he is no longer there. The song ends with only a sudden promise to become someone to lean on.

The narrator, crouching in front of the stove, is running through the title song 'Hero'. Contrary to the title, he is not a hero. However, it seems to have realized that everyone lives in their own world and is bound to be the main character in it. The keyword 'snowflake', which appeared in 'Fireplace', appears again and connects the story. If the guitar sound in 'Fireplace' was like the sound of a heart searching for its own beat, 'Hero' plays a completely different role, giving the song a sense of speed and dynamism. Nothing much has changed, but the surrounding landscape now looks perfectly prepared for the narrator, just like in an animated movie, just by changing the way he sees the world.

For me, 'OUTRO' was the highlight of the album. It was Lucy who put space in sound and colored it with melody to perfectly capture Lucy's worldview through her instrumental music. As if foreshadowing a masterpiece series that is difficult to limit on scale, the breadth of music is endless and the development is unstoppable. OUTRO's powerful concluding phrase gives off a sense of solemnity that was rarely heard in Lucy's previous music. The landscapes imagined so far are simply zoomed out and a black screen appears and the movie ends. And Lucy begins.

세 곡으로 그려내는 ‘시리즈 루시’의 프리퀄

한 편의 템포가 빠른 성장 영화를 본 것 같은 여운이 남았다. 다 해야 십여 분의 시간이었다는 게 기이할 정도로, 남은 잔상에 수많은 이야기가 담겨 있다.

‘난로’는 가사에서 지금 이전의 화자의 시간이 그려진다. 많이 외롭고 갈피를 잡지 못하는 청춘의 한자락. 누군가를 통해 한 모금의 용기를 얻은 화자는 모닥불을 바라보며 서서히 자신에게 주어진 긍정적인 상황에 집중한다. 때로는 긴 시간의 배움보다 짧은 성찰이 우리를 성큼 자라게 하듯 화자도 그랬다. 노래의 말미에 작은 모닥불이 세상 온기의 전부인 것 같았던 그는 더 이상 거기에 없다. 이제는 다른 이에게 기댈 누군가가 되겠다는 홀연 한 다짐만 남긴 채 노래는 끝난다.

난로 앞에 웅크렸던 화자는 타이틀곡 ‘히어로’ 속을 달리고 있다. 제목과 달리 그는 영웅의 모습은 아니다. 다만 누구나 자신만의 세상을 살고 그 속의 주인공일 수밖에 없다는 사실은 깨달은 듯하다. ‘난로’에서 등장한 ‘눈꽃’ 키워드는 다시 한번 등장하며 이야기를 잇는다. ‘난로’ 속의 기타음이 제 박동을 찾아가는 심장소리 같았다면 ‘히어로’에선 곡에 속도감과 역동성을 부여하며 전혀 다른 역할을 한다. 크게 달라진 건 없지만 세상을 보는 시선의 변화만으로 주변 풍경은 이제 애니메이션 영화 속에서처럼 화자를 위해 완벽히 준비되어 보인다.

나에겐 ‘OUTRO’가 앨범의 백미였다. 연주곡으로 루시의 세계관을 이토록 완벽하게 담다니, 과연 소리에 공간을 담고 멜로디로 색을 칠하는 루시 다웠다. 스케일에 한정을 짓기 힘든 대작 시리즈를 예고하듯 음악의 폭에는 끝이 없고 전개는 거침이 없다. OUTRO의 힘찬 종결 구는 이전의 루시 음악에선 좀처럼 들을 수 없던 비장함이 느껴진다. 이제껏 상상한 풍경들이 단순에 줌아웃되며 블랙 화면이 뜨고 영화는 끝난다. 그리고 루시는 시작된다.
