Bokyung Seo [Friendly Warmth]: 'How was your day?'
The same day given to everyone is so hard. I suddenly miss the warmth given by affection in the midst of daily life, which is just amazing how everyone endures these days silently. It is as distant as the story of an endangered species that is now difficult to meet. Now I know that affection is conveyed only with sincerity, and that the warmth conveyed in that way becomes the strength to endure tomorrow, which will be hard without change. People who talk about sweetness and warmth are getting more and more precious that's why.

The album [Friendly Warmth] is the second work by saxophonist Bokyung Seo. After releasing his debut film [Inner Movie] in 2020 with six songs, he quickly emerged as the most notable musician and performer of the year with just one album. Because of the instrument and field he plays, he is often classified as a jazz musician for convenience, but I am confident that anyone who has encountered Seo Bo-kyung's music would not have listened to his music confined to the set framework of jazz or saxophonist. From the first song 'Growing Tree' to the last song 'The last two lines on page 58', what was contained in the album was the totality of daily life felt by a person named Seo Bo-kyung, expressed in the form of music.

Seo Bo-kyung's story, which had been conveyed only through performances, met the lyrics this time. The new album [Friendly Warmth] is the second album Seo Bo-kyung made, as introduced earlier, and the first album containing songs with lyrics. Through this album, he carefully brings out his ego as a singer-songwriter and producer, not as a jazz musician or saxophonist. It may have been a difficult challenge, but the four songs in the album simply contain stories that are far from ambition or the word ambition. Through his previous work, he has already shown his talent as an outstanding storyteller who knows how to complete a story through the songs he wrote and breathing with his colleagues, rather than just playing, in [Friendly Warmth] as if this was my song from the beginning. With a calm expression as if it was a long road, he tells new stories to his heart's content.

The songs that come one step closer to us more clearly and with the message written in print according to his wishes complete the body with jazz vocalist Kim Young-mi, Anita Baek, singer-songwriter So Gak So-gak, and Seo Bo-kyung's own voice. 'Sometimes I want to sing while looking at what I see', 'Amen' depicting a day dreaming of a room of my own, and 'Boksoon-ah', where you can hear a dog barking somewhere after listening to it. ', and even the 'Tangja Tree', which reminds me of the small freshness of Tangja fruit shining under the sunlight. It seems like a warm and friendly note is attached to each song carefully handed out along with thoughtful performance. Carefully unfold the finely folded note. 'How was your day?'. 서보경 [다정한 온기]: '오늘 하루는 어땠어?'
누구에게나 주어진다는 똑같은 하루가 이리도 고되다. 다들 이런 매일을 어떻게 묵묵히 견뎌내는지 도통 신기할 따름인 팍팍한 일상 한 가운데 다정이 주는 온기가 문득 그리워진다. 이제는 좀처럼 만나기 힘들어진 멸종 위기종 이야기처럼 아득하다. 진심을 담아야만 전해지는 게 다정이고 그렇게 전한 온기가 변함없이 고될 내일 하루를 버티게 하는 힘이 된다는 걸 이제는 안다. 다정과 온기를 애써 이야기하는 사람들이 그래서 점점 더 소중해 진다.

앨범 [다정한 온기]는 색소포니스트 서보경의 두 번째 작품이다. 2020년 여섯 곡이 담긴 데뷔작 [내면의 영화]을 발표한 그는 단 한 장의 앨범으로 그 해 가장 주목 받는 음악가이자 연주자로 훌쩍 떠올랐다. 연주하는 악기와 필드 탓에 편의상 재즈 음악가로 분류되는 경우가 많지만, 서보경의 음악을 접한 이라면 누구라도 그의 음악을 재즈나 색소포니스트라는 정해진 틀 안에 가둬 듣지 않았으리라 자신한다. 첫 곡 '늘어나는 나무'에서 마지막 곡 '58쪽 마지막 두 줄'까지, 앨범에 담긴 건 음악이라는 형태로 표현된 서보경이라는 사람이 살아가며 느낀 일상의 총체였다.

그렇게 연주로만 전달되었던 서보경의 이야기가 이번에는 노랫말을 만났다. 새 앨범 [다정한 온기]는 앞서 소개한 것처럼 서보경이 만든 두 번째 앨범이자, 노랫말과 함께하는 곡들이 담긴 첫 앨범이다. 그는 이 앨범을 통해 재즈 음악가나 색소포니스트의 자아가 아닌, 싱어송라이터이자 프로듀서로서의 자아를 조심스레 꺼내 놓는다. 쉽지 않은 도전에 힘이 들어갔을 법도 하지만, 앨범에 담긴 4곡의 노래는 야심이나 야망이라는 단어와는 거리가 먼 이야기들을 그저 소담하게 담아낼 뿐이다. 전작을 통해 이미 단순한 연주가 아닌 자신이 쓴 노래와 동료들과의 호흡을 통해 한 편의 이야기를 완성해 낼 줄 아는 뛰어난 스토리텔로서의 재능을 선보인 그는, [다정한 온기]에서 마치 이것이 처음부터 나의 노래가 갈 길이었다는 듯 평온한 표정으로 새로운 이야기들을 마음껏 풀어낸다.

그의 바람대로 활자가 된 메시지와 함께 조금 더 선명하게 우리 곁으로 한 발 더 가깝게 다가온 노래들은 재즈보컬리스트 김영미, 아니타백, 싱어송라이터 소각소각과 서보경 자신의 목소리로 몸체를 완성해 간다. 그저 누군가를 원하는 마음을 담담하게 풀어놓은 '가끔은 보이는 것만 보며 노래하고 싶어', 자기만의 방을 꿈꾸는 어느 날을 그린 '아멘', 다 듣고 나면 어디선가 깡깡 짖어대는 강아지 소리가 들려오는 '복순아', 햇살을 받으며 빛나는 탱자 열매의 소소한 싱그러움이 떠오르는 '탱자나무'까지. 사려 깊은 연주와 함께 조심스레 건네는 노래 하나하나에 온기 어린 다정한 쪽지가 하나씩 붙어 있는 것만 같다. 곱게 접힌 쪽지를 조심스레 펼쳐본다. '오늘 하루는 어땠어?'. 종일 참 그리웠던 질문이다.
