Kim Tteutdol, whose unique voice transcends genres like folk, rock, pop, and jazz, sings diverse stories that are sometimes profound, sometimes witty, and sometimes simple. With his first full-length album, "A Phone Call in a Dream," he proves himself worthy of attention for his music alone. Refined yet raw, lively yet profound, Kim Tteutdol creates music that is both strange and beautiful, making one curious to see what's next.

Kim Tteutdol's first full-length album, "A Call in a Dream"

One day, Kim Tteutdol woke up from a dream to receive a phone call, and he turned the conversation into a song. The eleven songs, including "A Phone Call in a Dream," cover a wide range of topics, from checking in with an ex-friend, to conversations with a lover, to critiques of modern society, to the concept of death. For Kim Tteutdol, "dreams" are a frequent source of inspiration and a mythical element connecting the mysteries of life and death.

The first song, "A Call in a Dream," begins with someone entering my dreams and whispering. This someone constantly signals me to "stay awake," but the song ends without me answering the phone.
The next song, "The Man Without a Name," is about the Überman, or "superman," from Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra." He is the one who calls in dreams in the first track and is always "awake." Coming down from the mountain to awaken those who have fallen into foolishness, "The Man Without a Name," he asks people to become "those who throw away their names," saying, "Don't look for me, I'm already inside you." Kim Teut-dol says in the song that the transcendent power of love, invisible yet always present, is always watching over me "even on rainy days," and that such a superman is right within me.

Deeply influenced by Freud's discourse on the unconscious and Eastern philosophy, Kim Teotdol has many songs about death. "Bbipo Bbipo," which has surpassed one million streams on Onstage this year, can be considered a lighthearted will. The lyrics, which begin with "I don't know when I might die. If I'm walking down the street and get crushed by a high-altitude crane," offer a critical look at day laborers and a society that ignores safety. Kim Teotdol wrote this song immediately after reading a heartbreaking news article about a man who lost his life after being crushed by a high-altitude crane. As this song suggests, Kim Teotdol seeks to view death not simply as an individual narrative but as a social event. However, he does so without being overly heavy, encouraging the listener to imagine the subject of "death" in a lighthearted way.

Kim Teutdol also says, "I hope everyone who listens to this album will drink in love, like invisible air, and have sweet dreams." Whether it's meeting a superhuman or contemplating death, the important thing isn't the content of the dream. Just as waking up leaves only vague memories but vivid feelings, he hopes that even if listening to the album doesn't lead to profound realizations, it will leave behind a warm feeling, something Kim Teutdol hopes to convey.

김뜻돌 첫번째 정규 앨범 《꿈에서 걸려온 전화》

어느 날 꿈에서 전화를 받고 깬 김뜻돌은 자신이 꿈속에서 나눈 이야기를 노래로 만들었다. [꿈에서 걸려온 전화]를 비롯한 총 11곡에는 절교한 친구와의 안부부터 연인과의 대화, 현 사회에 대한 비판, 죽음에 대한 이야기까지 다양한 주제의 대화가 담겨있다. 김뜻돌에게 '꿈'이란 영감의 원천이자 삶과 죽음의 미스터리를 잇는 신화적 요소로 자주 등장한다.

첫번째 곡 [꿈에서 걸려온 전화]은 누군가가 '나'의 꿈에 들어와 속삭이면서 시작된다. 그 누군가는 나에게 끊임없이 '깨어있으라'는 신호를 보내나 끝내 전화는 받지 못한 채로 첫번째 곡이 마무리 된다.
이어 다음 곡 [이름이 없는 사람]은 니체의 <차라투스트라는 이렇게 말했다>에 나오는 위버맨시, 즉 '초인'의 이야기다. 그는 첫번째 트랙에서 꿈에서 전화를 거는 사람이자 항상 '깨어있는 자'다. 어리석음에 빠진 사람들을 깨우치기 위해 산에서 내려온 [이름이 없는 사람]은 '날 찾지마, 이미 네 안에 있는걸' 이라며 사람들에게 '이름을 버리는 사람' 이 되기를 청한다. 눈에 보이지는 않지만 언제나 그 자리에 존재하는 초월적인 사랑의 힘은 '비가 오는 날에도 항상 항상' 나를 지켜보고 있음을, 그런 초인이 바로 내 안에 있음을 김뜻돌은 노래 안에서 말한다.

프로이트의 무의식 담론과 동양 철학에 많은 영향을 받은 김뜻돌은 특히 죽음에 대한 곡들이 많다. 올해로 온스테이지에서 100만회를 훌쩍 넘은 <삐뽀삐뽀>는 경쾌한 유서라고 할 수 있다. '나는 내가 언제 죽을지도 몰라요. 길을 걷다 고공 크레인에 내가 깔려 죽으면' 이라고 시작되는 가사는 일용직 노동자들과 안전에 무색한 사회에 대한 비판적인 시선이 담겨있다. 실제로 김뜻돌은 이 곡을 고공크레인에 깔려 생명을 잃은 안타까운 기사를 접한 직후 만들었다. 이 곡에서 엿볼 수 있듯 김뜻돌은 죽음을 단순히 개개인의 서사를 넘어 사회적인 사건으로 보고자 한다. 그러나 너무 무겁지 않게, 듣는 이로 하여금 '죽음' 이라는 주제를 조금이라도 경쾌하게 상상하게끔 이끈다.

덧붙여 김뜻돌은 '이 앨범을 듣는 모두가 보이지 않는 공기처럼 사랑을 흠뻑 마시고 좋은 꿈을 꾸었으면 좋겠다'고 말한다. 초인을 만나든 죽음을 떠올리든 중요한 것은 꿈 속의 내용이 아니다. 깨어나면 어렴풋한 기억만이 남지만 기분은 선명한 것처럼, 앨범을 듣고서 심오한 깨달음이 아니더라도 그저 김뜻돌이 전하고자 하는 따듯한 느낌만이 남아도 좋겠다는 바람이다.
